  • Innovation needs validation in the field. Our field trips help us understand how people use our solar panels and how we can further improve them for #EnergyAccess. Off-grid solar panels are a vital resource for small businesses and families in areas where the electricity grid is unreliable or simply non-existent. To reach universal access to energy was central to the discussions at the #GOGSFE24 in Nairobi. As proud members of GOGLA from the beginning, we’ve not only attended every expo but have also made it a priority to visit the people using our panels. 🌍 Our panels for Solar Home Systems (SHS) are designed in Germany and China. Visits on site show us how we can customize them even better to local requirements. On field trips – this time with Sun King and ENGIE Energy Access (Africa) – we discuss our products with agents, SHS shops, installers, after sales and families alike. ⚡️ Portable, compact solutions are game-changers for small businesses. From small shops to Mama Mbogas (female vegetable vendors) or even Boda Bodas (motorbike taxis), many use small solar systems not only for lighting, but also for charging mobile phones and listening to the radio. 🛖 Homeowners usually only bring the main system back to the shop in case of a defect, as the panels are installed on the roof and are difficult to remove. And as customers in rural areas are often several hours away from a shop, ensuring high quality panels is crucial. 🏍️ Last mile delivery is often done by motorbikes. Transporting SHS by bike to rural areas means packaging needs to be compact. Our more efficient and therefore smaller mono-crystalline panels or even our foldable ones are useful in these cases. 📺 And it’s not just the panels – energy-efficient appliances play a huge role in the system’s effectiveness. For instance, today’s 32-inch TVs for SHS consume just about 8W compared to 15W a few years ago, making the entire setup more efficient and affordable. 💵 PayGo is still the most popular payment option with over 95%. The SHS is leased and paid for on a monthly or daily basis. 🟢 Kenya’s ambitious goal of eliminating fossil fuels from its energy mix by 2030 is progressing well. While geothermal energy from Lake Naivasha continues to grow as the main energy source, electricity is still relatively expensive, making solar a fast-paying investment.   • Mobility must reduce carbon emissions – there's no doubt about that. However, the approach differs between regions like Europe and Africa. E-Mobility is essentially climate tech, and it’s exciting to witness its growth across Africa. The electrification of 2- and 3-wheelers is happening fast but still on a small scale. Also buses are making the switch. At the Global Off-Grid Solar Forum and Expo our CEO Robert Händel joined other industry leaders on a session to explore how this can be accelerated from a financial and also technological perspective. Here are a few insights from the discussion: 🏍️ The e-mobility market is still young, but investors shouldn’t wait for a clear winner to emerge. Investment is crucial now to build the market, and access to finance is key. 💨 Carbon emissions need to be better reflected, whether in the EU or Africa. Solutions like the VECTO or carbon credits – and integrating carbon credits more into financing mechanisms – are essential for driving real impact. ⚙️ Research and development should take place in Africa, rather than simply importing from China or Germany. Local innovation is vital. 📏 Standardization is key for market growth. Not only does it reduce investment risk, but it also accelerates collaboration. In a young industry, cooperation between all players is especially crucial. Off-Grid Solar is a key to universal access to energy. ⚡️ Modern energy is vital for providing reliable lighting, heating, cooking as well as clean water, sanitation, healthcare or transportation, and telecommunications. Modern energy is essential for human well-being and a country’s economic growth. ☀️ As the cheapest source of electricity generation, solar energy fulfills an important function in providing energy access. Off-Grid Solar panels efficiently serve those without access to a reliable grid. 🏭 Solar panels should be cost-effective, easy to install, and designed for self-cleaning to minimize dust buildup. Cables may need replacement due to damage from sharp roof edges or animals, but the junction box must remain waterproof and maintain an IP64 rating. ⚙️ The off-grid solar segment is still underserved in the photovoltaic market and production equipment is not available on the shelf. The production of Off-Grid Solar modules accounts for less than 1% of the global photovoltaic industry. The largest solar companies are not operating in this sector. We congratulate Projet Esteban, Voiture Solaire on all their wins in this year's competitions.   Is it possible to drive only on sunshine? Every year, students in North America (and around the world) explore this new horizon of mobility. At OPES, we are proud to support Team Esteban as they push the boundaries of solar mobility.   Formula Sun Grand Prix   🥇 Winner of the FSGP 2024  🚀 Qualified for the American Solar Challenge  The team recharged only with the sun!    Electrek American Solar Challenge 🥇 Winner of the ASC 2024 🏅 Best mechanical design 🏆 Safety award 🏁 Won 3 of the 4 stages The 8-days Competition takes the teams over 3500km through the United States. Partly with great views while charging.   The racing car is charged with 1218 W solar panels. The average speed is 58 km/h and the energy consumption is 10 times lower than that of standard electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model S. How amazing is that?   This is such a great team effort. Well deserved Projet Esteban, Voiture Solaire and Polytechnique Montréal.
