Around 120 scientists work at the Cluster of the Leibniz University Hannover on novel integrated optics.
Info
Around 120 scientists of the Cluster of Excellence "PhoenixD: Photonics, Optics, and Engineering - Innovation across Disciplines" are working on the next evolutionary step – novel integrated optics. With the advanced technology, the researchers plan to take mechanical engineering and production processes to a new level and build a production platform. The optics researchers are investigating how they can realise complex optical systems in a short development time and for a fraction of today's price. To achieve this aim, Leibniz University Hannover's scientists join their forces with project partners from Technical University Braunschweig and Laser Zentrum Hannover e. V. Two trends trigger the desired paradigm shift in optics production: more powerful data processing and improved (additive) manufacturing methods. These trends enable scientists to realise a digitally and physically networked production platform for optical components and systems. It requires measurement and production technology and a great deal of computing power, and the development of algorithms and new types of optical composite materials consisting of glass and plastic, among other things. With the production platform to be set up in the OPTICUM, the scientists can check the optics' quality during ongoing production. Still, production defects can also be corrected in real-time. The research goals include an increase in precision and a reduction in resource and energy consumption than the current state of the art. Many fundamental questions still need to be answered over the next ten years to achieve these goals. PhoenixD is a Cluster of Excellence funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) under Germany's Excellence Strategy. The Cluster engages in fostering the knowledge about optical technologies at different educational levels with it's PhoenixD Research School.

👏👏 Birgit Stiller awarded European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant 👏👏 Huge congrats to MPL researcher and group leader Birgit Stiller on receiving the three-million-euro funding prize for her research project ‘Sound-Computing’! Using optoacoustic neural networks to take artificial intelligence (AI) to the next level. This is the ambitious goal of the project. The scientist wants to create alternative computing architectures for neuromorphic computing to enhance future approaches to machine learning and AI. “The ERC Consolidator Grant, with its generous funding, gives me and my team the opportunity to realize the idea of neuromorphic structures with light-sound interactions,” says Birgit Stiller. “The ERC projects will also undergo a thorough evaluation by international panels, which makes me all the more pleased to be among the lucky recipients of one of these grants.” Learn more about ‘Sound-Computing’ 👉 https://lnkd.in/dbxk_qRG #AI #artificialintelligence #ERCCoG #MachineLearning #Grant

#Free event: PhoenixD members Carolin König and Thomas Wick will explain the #research achievements of this year's Nobel Prize laureates in physics and chemistry on 07/12/24 at Leibniz Universität Hannover (11:00-13:00). The Hannover regional group of the young German Physical Society (jDPG) organizes this Nobel Prize lecture. This year’s two Nobel Laureates in #Physics - John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton - have used tools from physics to develop methods that are the foundation of today’s powerful machine learning. Hopfield created an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and other types of patterns in data. Hinton invented a method that can autonomously find properties in data, and so perform tasks such as identifying specific elements in pictures. The Nobel Prize in #Chemistry 2024 is about proteins. David Baker has succeeded with building entirely new kinds of proteins. Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have developed an AI model to predict proteins’ complex structures. Thomas Wick and Carolin König will explain, why these discoveries hold such enormous potential! The lecture will be held in German. Time to celebrate! The European Research Council (ERC) awards PhoenixD board member Birgit Stiller with a prestigious Consolidator Grant. The physicist and mathematician receives funding of up to three million euros to research alternative computing architectures – optoacoustic neural networks - enhancing machine learning and artificial intelligence. Prof. Dr. Birgit Stiller and her team at the Cluster of Excellence PhoenixD at Leibniz University Hannover and the Max-Planck-Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen are delighted: The physicist and mathematician received a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) to pursue her research project "Computing with Light and Sound". "My project tackles the challenge of alternative computing architectures for neuromorphic computing to enhance future machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches", says Prof. Dr. Birgit Stiller, who accepted a professorship at Leibniz University Hannover and joined the PhoenixD board this year. Since 2019, she has headed a Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen. "We will use light-sound interactions in optical fibers and photonic chips to create versatile neural network structures – optoacoustic neural networks." Good news! PhoenixD is celebrating the topping-out ceremony for its research building OPTICUM. The shell is complete and shows the future room layout. Take a look at the new optics center of the Leibniz University of Hannover. The research building has around 4000 square meters of floor space. The construction shall be completed at the end of 2026. The four-story OPTICUM is located in the ScienceArea 30X (formerly Hannover-Marienwerder Science Park). In the future, almost 120 optical researchers from Leibniz University Hannover will work there together with project partners from the TU Braunschweig and the LZH - Laser Zentrum Hannover, etc. V. to investigate how complex optical systems can be realized using modern manufacturing processes – e.g., 3D printing – at a fraction of today's price and in a short development time. The new research building will then have sufficient offices, laboratories, and experimental halls to assemble the fully networked production platform in one place. The desired paradigm shift in optics production is made possible by two trends: more powerful data processing and improved (additive) manufacturing methods. It will enable the scientists to realize a digitally and physically networked production platform for optical components and systems. This requires not only measurement and production technology and a great deal of computing power but also the development of algorithms and novel optical composite materials consisting, among other things, of glass and plastic. The production platform planned for the OPTICUM will be able to monitor the quality of the optics during production and correct manufacturing defects in real-time. The federal government, the state of Lower Saxony and Leibniz University Hannover will share the total construction costs of 89 million euros. The construction is being carried out closely with the general planner Henn Architekten.
