Last week, ProVeg Asia organised two student group visits to Unilever in Shanghai and Bühler Group in Wuxi, as part of the 2024 Food Innovation Challenge campaign. 🌱💡 In Shanghai, Unilever introduced The Vegetarian Butcher's brand strategy, innovation, and market learnings to the students, and they discussed the growing potential of plant-based food with flexitarians. ProVeg Asia’s Country Director Shirley also facilitated talks of internship opportunities. In Wuxi, the students were introduced to Dr. Yang Yong, SVP of Bühler, who gave a tour of the company’s history, business scope, corporate culture, and technological innovations. The students raised questions about new alternative protein sources, and Dr. Yang emphasised that alternative proteins in China are still in the early stages of development and more solutions are needed. 🔍 They toured Bühler's manufacturing plant, witnessed the full scope of the company's plant-based manufacturing equipment, and were impressed by its advanced technology, sparking their interest in sustainable food production. At both locations, the students were provided with hands-on industry experience and their understanding of plant-based innovations and sustainable food production was deepened. Thanks for having ProVeg Asia, Unilever and Bühler! 💚 #ProVeg #Uniliver #AlternativeProteins

🇪🇺 Last week, we attended the European Allinance for Plant-based Foods event Let’s Plant Our Future and had the privilege of contributing to a vital dialogue on the future of EU food systems! The discussion brought together key policymakers to exchange about the growing role of plant-based foods in achieving the EU transition towards a healthier and more sustainable food system. 🌱 During the discussion, Anna StrolenbergMEP (Greens/EFA), highlighted the significant economic, social, and environmental benefits that transitioning to more plant-rich diets could bring to the EU. 💬 Ramon Sumoy, Deputy Head of Unit for Policy Perspectives at DG AGRI, shared valuable insights into the Commission's plans for agri-food systems. He emphasised the critical importance of advancing the sustainability transition in EU food systems, highlighting that success depends on the active engagement of all stakeholders in this transformative journey. This was accompanied by remarks from Cecilia McAleavey, EAPF President, and Siska Pottie EAPF Secretary General, who reflected on the alliance's successes and upcoming challenges, sparking a lively discussion amongst stakeholders about the path forward. 🤝 This inspiring exchange underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in shaping sustainable food systems. ProVeg International is proud to be part of this conversation, and we are committed to driving forward the transformation of our food systems. Thanks again to European Alliance for Plant-based Foods for organising such an insightful event! #ProVeg #EUPolicy #EUFoodSystem

Highlights from the AVA Summit in Brazil 🇧🇷 This year’s summit gave us a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse audience, including attendees from VegFest. Not only did we connect with fellow advocates, but also with consumers, citizens, and representatives from other institutions. As a proud event sponsor, the ProVeg booth welcomed countless visitors, allowing us to showcase the impactful work that ProVeg Brazil is beginning to undertake. These conversations and connections are invaluable as we build momentum towards next year’s UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) and beyond. 🌎 A big thank you to everyone who stopped by and to the AVA Summit for hosting such an inspiring event. On World Human Rights Day, we celebrate equality as a basic human right - and what better way to align our values than by embracing plant-based diets for a fairer, more sustainable world? 🌍 At ProVeg, we believe plant-based diets are key to addressing global inequality and creating a more equitable food system for all. From Africa to Latin America, Asia to Europe, plant-based initiatives are transforming food security, cultural practices, and sustainability across the globe. - In Africa, drought-resistant crops and plant-based options are strengthening food security. - Latin America is preserving cultural identity through sustainable, plant-based farming practices. - In Asia, affordable plant-based staples like tofu and rice are helping fight hunger and improve nutrition. - Meanwhile, in Europe and North America, shifting to plant-based diets reduces waste and overconsumption, helping to address excess food production that strains global resources. Did you know? While plant-based milk alternatives often have less fat and saturated fat than cow’s milk, fortification can make all the difference in their nutritional value. 💡 Key insights from our analysis: - In countries like Belgium, Italy, and the Netherlands, fortified plant-based milks achieve top scores (7–7.7 out of 9) for their nutritional value. - Soya milk stands out, matching or surpassing cow’s milk in protein content and offering significantly less saturated fat. - Fortified plant-based milk can rival cow’s milk in calcium and vitamin D levels, with the US leading in fortification practices. With over 68% of the global population being lactose intolerant, plant-based milk provides an accessible and nutritious alternative for many - proving it's more than just a trend; it’s a solution. 🌱 ➡️ Read the full ‘Building bridges between between habit and health’ report here: https://hubs.ly/Q02-XLFQ0 #ProVeg #PlantBasedMilk #AlternativeProteins

At COP29, we had the opportunity to sit down with Shreya Ghodawat, a passionate climate advocate from India, to discuss the critical role of plant-based diets in tackling climate change. 🌱 Shreya shared insightful thoughts on how animal agriculture contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and soil degradation, occupying 80% of global agricultural land. By shifting to plant-based diets, we could free up billions of hectares of land and drastically reduce our environmental impact. 🌾 She also highlighted a shocking fact: chickens require up to nine calories of crops to produce just one calorie of meat. Why not cut out the middleman and go directly to plant-based sources of protein? It's clear: switching to plant-based foods is one of the most effective ways to reduce resource dependency and combat climate change. 💚 #ProVeg #ClimateActivist #COP29
