In order to be eligible for carbon removal credits, a Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) project must meet several rigorous requirements, one of the most important and complex being the concept of “additionality”. Simply put, additionality is about proving that a BCR project would not have materialized without the climate finance incentive. Additionality is so much more than a requirement—it’s a cornerstone of credibility protecting the integrity of carbon credits and ensuring that biochar projects make a genuine and measurable contribution to the fight against climate change, but proving additionality is a complex undertaking. It’s official – global warming has hit a record high with 2024 being confirmed as the warmest year ever recorded, and the first year the average global temperature exceeded the 1.5°C threshold. Knowing that human-induced practices remain the primary driver of climate change, the path forward is clear – we as a society need to take action, reduce current and future emissions, and implement technologies and efforts that permanently remove CO2 from the atmosphere. This is precisely what makes proven, sustainable, and scalable CDR technology like PYREG so valuable to our future. Less than halfway through their multi-year investigation, Maine state inspectors have identified an alarming number of farms and residential properties as being contaminated with PFAS – harmful ‘forever chemicals’ left behind by the widespread use of sewage sludge-based fertilizer. Click the link for the whole story and contact PYREG to learn why our pyrolysis systems are a proven and scalable solution for destroying PFAS in sewage sludge, and how the biochar that our systems produce can be used as a powerful remediation tool for PFAS-contaminated soil. https://lnkd.in/gg5Zez6j Standard Biocarbon #Biochar #BCR #CDR #PFAS #ForeverChemicals #Farming #Agriculture #SoilHealth #SewageSludge #Fertilizer #Sustainability #SustainableAgriculture

Our partner Standard Biocarbon is using PYREG technology to do amazing things for Maine’s forestry and agriculture industries. SBC’s facility takes sawmill byproducts like wood chips, pins, and fines and transforms these residuals into high-quality biochar, creating a new revenue stream for forestry businesses and helping to maintain healthy, productive forests. The biochar produced is being used by Maine’s agriculture industry as a soil remediation solution for agricultural land that’s been contaminated with harmful PFAS, offering the state a tool to help restore health and safety. Researchers in Italy conducted one of the longest real-field biochar experiments aimed at assessing the long-term permanence of biochar in agricultural soil. 15-year-old biochar was unearthed from a vineyard in southern Tuscany, washed with distilled water, and then tested against original samples of unused biochar. The inertinite and semi-inertinite fractions in the unearthed and washed biochar were comparable, meaning the unearthed biochar remained almost unchanged even after 15 years of active use in agricultural soil. This confirms the permanent nature of the inertinite and semi-inertinite shares of carbon in biochar. The PFAS crisis from land application of sewage sludge is leading to devastating effects on farms and ranches across the United States – especially in states like Texas where agriculture and livestock are among their leading industries. Research proves that the PFAS threat is real, that it’s widespread, and is linked to a wide range of significant health risks in humans and animals, but there is something we can do. PYREG is a proven and scalable solution for destroying PFAS in sewage sludge. PYREG’s pyrolysis systems convert contaminated sewage sludge into clean, high-quality biochar which can be used as valuable fertilizer. Additionally, when placed in the soil, that same biochar acts as a soil remediation “super magnet”, absorbing PFAS that were already present in the soil. https://lnkd.in/ejfFJevU #Biochar #BCR #CDR #PFAS #Biosolids #ForeverChemicals #Farming #Agriculture #SoilHealth #SustainableAgriculture #Fertilizer
