  • 📦 Trip to the “Museum der Arbeit” - “Your package is here!” How has the mail order business developed? What were the biggest bestsellers? And what stories are behind parcels? 📬 Prof. Dr. Rita Müller, Director of the Museum der Arbeit, took us on an exciting journey through 150 years of mail order history. Highlights of the exhibition: 📜 Historical catalogs & cult bestsellers 📦 Interactive packing station - teamwork required! 📜 Mispurchases & letters to parcel deliverers Espacially nice: We were not alone that evening! Together with 21 guests from RC Rotenburg/Wümme, including President Marianne Bähr, we enjoyed the exhibition and a relaxed dinner. Since our joint event for the Rotary Convention 2019, our clubs have enjoyed a cheerful and friendly relationship - and this evening further strengthened it.✨

  • 🌍 Hamburg: The most beautiful city in the world - but how fit for the future are we really? Hamburg in 2040 - how do we want to live and on what? 📢 Julia Offen, Managing Director of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and Head of Strategic Communications, does not provide any easy answers in her presentation. Instead, she provides an in-depth analysis of where Hamburg currently stands - and shows how far behind other major international cities we are. But she also talks about potential, good ideas and suggestions for turning things around. Her focus areas: - 🚀 Innovative strength and entrepreneurship - 🚲 Mobility and health - ⚓ Port and infrastructure - 🌱 Climate change and sustainability - 👩💻 Shortage of skilled workers - 🛡️ Resilience and defense A lecture that not only makes you think, but also inspires you to act. #Hamburg2040 #Innovation #Shapingthefuture

  • On 9 October, we gave Governor Jörg Kutzim a warm welcome to our club Hamburg-HafenCity at Speicherstadt and exchanged with him ideas and thoughts for District 1890. In his address, our president Peter Schmid described the club's understanding of the role and task of the governor with the quote by Warren Bennis: ‘Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.’ Our club then has been introduced to the district governor more closely: As supporting Rotaract HamburgCity we appreciate the common charity events. In the last years during summer holidays joint meetings with rotary club Hamburg-Dammtor took place, which helped to build a very close bond, relationship and exchange with this neighbouring club. Further synergies are being discussed. This weekend, some of our friends are enjoying the visit to our partner club Hengelo-Enschede Dubbelstad in the Netherlands. The club’s charity projects are committed to children on the margins of society, promoting education, sustainability and emergency aid and combating diseases or health problems. Closest to our hearts is the long-standing support for the Aktivspielplatz Altona Nord e. V., which enables children from the neighbourhood to receive a warm lunch or attend vacation trips. Now achieving the grant for the studies of exchange student Megan Curling (group photo 2nd from right), whom we warmly welcomed on Thursday, is the biggest source of pride for all our members. #rotary #charity #rotary1890 #rotaracthamburgcity #rotary_hh_hafencity #warrenbennis #leadership #vision #partnerclub #aktivspielplatz_altonanord #education #children #grant #exchange

  • Civil courage in the Nazi era: Aracy, the angel of Hamburg The lawyer and honorary consul of Brazil, Dr. Jan Curschmann, has brought a very special and little-known case of outstanding civil courage to our attention. The fate of the Brazilian Catholic Aracy de Carvalho is closely linked to the many successful escape stories of Jewish emigrants from Hamburg to Brazil between 1934 and 1942. Freshly arrived in Germany, Aracy starts in Hamburg at the Brazilian consulate as head of the passport and visa department. She is 28 years old and has a young son. She is shocked to see how Jewish people are treated with increasing brutality during the years of the Third Reich, especially after the racial laws come into force in 1935. And so Aracy begins to organize her own personal escape aid. Unrecognized, she obtained the necessary papers for many Jews to leave Germany. Even when Brazil stopped issuing visas to Jews in 1938, she found ways and means. Her civil courage and courageous commitment are outstanding, as she had to reckon with the possibility of being arrested by the Nazis at any time. The many personal photos in the book “Justa”, a Brazilian biography about Aracy de Carvalho, are touching. In 2021/22, an impressive and informative documentary “Aracy - the Angel of Hamburg” was produced for Arte. How appropriate it would be right now to pay tribute to the memory of this outstanding Photos: Christa Eickmeyer / Dr. Phanthian Zuesongdham

  • == Container shipping in times of change == Club Visit by Dr. Maximilian Rothkopf, COO of Hapag-Lloyd AG 291 container ships, nearly 12 million TEU annually, 16,600 employees in 139+ countries: Our August lunch meeting spotlighted Hapag-Lloyd, a Hamburg icon with 177 years of history. From mail and passenger traffic to a leading global container shipping company, Hapag-Lloyd stands out with a strong quality promise. Dr. Maximilian Rothkopf, COO since 2019, shared insights into the challenges and developments in #containershipping. He highlighted the ”Strategy 2030” focusing on quality, #decarbonization and growth. The upcoming “#GeminiCooperation” with Maersk in 2025 marks another significant step forward. Despite global geopolitical uncertainties, Hapag-Lloyd remains committed to efficient, environmentally friendly maritime logistics. For example, since December 2023, due to the crisis in the Red Sea, all Hapag-Lloyd ships have been sailing a 7,000 km longer route around the Cape of Good Hope / South Africa to ensure the safety of crew, ships and cargo. “Politics is one thing, but trade finds its own way.” Thank you very much, Dr. Rothkopf, for your time and these exciting insights!
