🌍 Today marks the start of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) in Busan, Republic of Korea, where global leaders will work toward a legally binding agreement to tackle plastic pollution, including in marine environments. This session, running through December 1, 2024, builds on the historic UN resolution from March 2022, and the EU's recent endorsement of the Bridge to Busan declaration further strengthens this commitment. 🚀 At the forefront of innovative solutions, ReBioCycle is pioneering a circular approach to bioplastic waste, focusing on sorting and recycling three key bioplastics—PLA, PHA, and composites. Through three specialised, waste-processor-centric hubs, ReBioCycle demonstrates practical, scalable technologies in real-world environments to recycle biobased plastics into high-quality materials for new products. ReBioCycle’s Key Objectives: ♻ Advance circularity and resource efficiency by applying circular bioeconomy principles in biobased and biodegradable plastics. ♻ Scale up sorting and recycling schemes specifically for biobased and biodegradable materials. ♻ Boost recycled content in new products from these bioplastics. ♻ Enhance environmental performance across the value chain compared to fossil and biobased benchmarks. ♻ Increase public acceptance of circular biobased solutions, supporting their broader market adoption. 🌍 ReBioCycle: Driving Policy-Aligned Innovation in Bioplastics Recycling The ReBioCycle project is making a significant contribution to the European policy framework aimed at creating a sustainable, circular future. By developing effective #recycling technologies for #biobased #biodegradable plastics, ReBioCycle supports key #EU initiatives: ♻ Circular Economy Action Plan: Advancing resource efficiency through innovative bioplastic recycling solutions. ♻ EU Plastics Strategy: Reducing plastic waste and integrating biobased materials into sustainable waste management systems. ♻ Waste Framework Directive: Establishing best practices in the collection, sorting, and recycling of biobased biodegradable plastics. Additionally, ReBioCycle contributes to the Zero Pollution Action Plan by preventing plastic pollution, and the EU Bioeconomy Strategy by fostering circularity in biobased production and consumption. 📈 Challenge 2: Scaling #Biobased Plastic #Recycling from Lab to Real-World Applications To fully integrate biobased #biodegradable plastics into the circular economy, we need to scale recycling methods beyond the lab. While research exists at a small scale, it’s time to move to pilot and demonstration levels to develop commercially viable solutions. 🔬 ReBioCycle is focused on advancing the technology readiness level of recycling methods by scaling up sorting and processing technologies. Which challenges do we face when in integrating #biobased #biodegradable plastics into the circular economy? 🔍 Challenge 1: Data Gaps in Recycling Biobased #Plastics One key challenge is the lack of data on their sorting and #recycling at demonstration scale. 🌍 Without clear insights into end-of-life options, it’s difficult to bring these materials into a sustainable loop. ReBioCycle is tackling this by testing and scaling innovative mechanical, chemical, and biological recycling technologies to establish effective recycling paths for biobased plastics. #ReBioCycle challenge accepted ♻ The integration of biobased biodegradable plastics into the circular economy requires the establishment of collection and sorting strategies for biobased biodegradable plastics that are compatible with current waste management practices and their subsequent recycling through novel technologies. Biobased plastic waste does not yet constitute a relevant amount of the total plastic waste (being only 1% in weight). Still, due to their high weight in the political agenda it is easy to foresee that biobased plastics will gain a relevant market share in the near future.
