The new deposit system in Austria is causing uncertainty. Christian Abl, managing director of Reclay in Austria, talks to RegionalMedien Austria about the challenges associated with the introduction of the new deposit system. ❌ Too little competition in the deposit system! There is a lack of competition in the deposit system, which leads to a monopoly that inhibits innovation and could increase costs for consumers. ⛷ On to the Nightrace 2025 - with waste separation and recycling! The Austrian winter sports highlight is back - Schladming once again hosts the legendary 'THE Nightrace'! Thousands of ski fans and top international athletes create a thrilling atmosphere every year. But our initiative RecycleMich wants more than just action on the slopes: with our yellow bins we make sure that waste separation also plays an important role during this event. ‘We are excited about our cooperation with Mr. Josef Mitterwallner from the Schladming Waste Management Association to make major events more sustainable. Our labels on the yellow bins are designed to make visitors aware of how to dispose of their packaging properly', explains Gottfried Bieglmayer, Managing Director of Reclay Systems in Austria. 'By scanning the barcode on the label of their empty packaging the RecycleMich app provides important information on how to sort and recycle correctly. Umweltbundesamt - German Environment Agency and Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister (ZSVR) recognise the achievements of the PROs in Germany. 🤝At a joint press conference on 21 January, UBA and ZSVR reported on their work and successes in packaging recycling. Current trends and challenges were also discussed. We are very pleased that the hard work of the German PROs and the entire waste management industry is being recognised and appreciated. Particularly in view of the well-known challenges such as the increasing proportion of residual waste in the yellow bin and the yellow bag, the results of this work are a real success. In 2025, Reclay and its partner network will continue to work towards a functioning environmental services sector in Germany and internationally. In order to achieve our goals, however, we are dependent on the cooperation of all those involved — not least the consumers who separate their waste correctly. The communication of the German PROs through the Initiative "Mülltrennung wirkt" was also praised at the press conference. This gives consumers helpful tips on how to dispose of used packaging correctly. Recycling management affects us all. #reclay #circulareconomy #recycling

The VKS Verpackungskoordinierungsstelle gemeinnützige Gesellschaft mbH is responsible for the successful coordination of various tasks related to the collection of packaging waste in Austria. 📣 The 20th call for proposals for waste prevention funding is online, and suitable projects can be submitted to the VKS until 14 April. The aim of this funding is to strengthen and enable the development and implementation of projects and measures for sustainable, qualitative and/or quantitative waste prevention in Austria – and thus to reduce environmental pollution. Warum Wettbewerb auch in der Abfallwirtschaft von so großer Bedeutung ist, liegt eigentlich auf der Hand: ✅ Faires und transparentes Wirtschaften 💰 Günstigere und dynamischere Preise 😊 Kundenbedürfnisse stehen im Mittelpunkt Auf der anderen Seite bleibt Österreich im Recycling immer noch hinter Spitzenreitern zurück, weil es auch nach 15 Jahren noch an einheitlichen Systemen, technologischer Innovation und ambitionierten politischen Maßnahmen fehlt. Während Vorreiterländer wie Deutschland oder Frankreich konsequent auf nationale Strategien und technologische Vorstöße setzen, ist Österreichs Ansatz noch zu fragmentiert und auf kurzfristige Lösungen fokussiert. Verbesserungen könnten unserer Ansicht nach durch ◾️ flächendeckende Pfandsysteme für Getränkeverpackungen ◾️ die Verstärkung der Incentivierung und Konsumenteninformation mit Hilfe digitaler Apps ◾️ eine schnelle Einführung und Kontrolle von Mindestgehalten von Rezyklaten in alle Verpackungen und ◾️ die sukzessive Digitalisierung der Kreislaufwirtschaft erzielt werden. EUWID | Recycling und Entsorgung reports that numerous companies that are placing packaging on the German market for the first time apparently have not yet signed contracts with a PRO for 2025. The Central Packaging Registry (ZSVR) points out that companies must fulfil their obligations under the Packaging Act by 31 December at the latest. ❌ Otherwise, consequences such as a distribution ban, fines or entries in the central trade register may follow. From 1 January 2025, new requirements for labelling packaging that ends up as waste in private households will come into force in Spain. With the royal decree 1055/2022, this labelling of packaging will become a legal requirement for manufacturers and distributors.
