Read the recent article from The Maritime Executive; Technology, Regulation and a Case of Oily Separation.   The article examines a recent update from the Australian Maritime Safety Agency (AMSA) which acknowledged that flow or pressure sensors are ‘not specifically’ required for the alarms mandated in IMO oil filtering provisions for bilge water under MEPC107(49). However, AMSA Marine Notice 2024/03 went on to interpret the failure of a 15ppm bilge alarm to activate the automatic stopping device in the absence of sample flow as non-compliance.   “RWO invested in a technically superior solution and the market has increasingly come round to our way of thinking, but we have also been liaising with our customers and with AMSA to make sure that this misunderstanding of the rules does not stand,” says Stratos Papamichalis, Managing Director, RWO.   Collaboration between regulators, shipowners, and manufacturers like RWO is essential for a safer, more sustainable future at sea. 🚢 Advancing Shipboard Health & Safety with HS4U 🌍 Last week, our RWO team embarked on an exciting journey aboard the Celestyal Discovery as part of the HS4U EU project. Over four days, we conducted an intensive sampling campaign to evaluate innovative methods for virus detection in marine environments. Our work is helping shape a future where passenger and crew health on cruise ships is safeguarded through advanced detection technologies and collaboration. Together with partners, we: 🔹 Collected and analyzed samples near critical shipboard processing units. 🔹 Collaborated on the development of a state-of-the-art semi-continuous wastewater sampling device to enhance virus detection sensitivity. 🔹 Contributed to brainstorming sessions and risk assessments for resilient maritime health practices. Next steps?
