In fashion, the appeal of ever-changing trends often translates into a culture of over-consumption. From a business model standpoint, this voracious appetite for new styles fuels profits. The fashion industry thrives on a model that relies on frequent turnover of products, enticing consumers to constantly purchase the latest designs. This perpetual cycle generates revenue streams for brands, but it comes at a significant cost to both the consumer's psychology and the environment. Consumer psychology plays a key role in perpetuating the cycle of over-consumption in fashion. The desire for novelty and the fear of being left behind drive individuals to continuously seek out the latest trends. Marketers capitalize on these psychological triggers, employing strategies that instill a sense of urgency and exclusivity, compelling consumers to make impulsive purchases. This relentless pursuit of newness not only creates a cycle of dissatisfaction but also fosters a culture of disposability, where garments are discarded after minimal use, contributing to massive amounts of waste. The environmental consequences of fashion overconsumption are staggering. The production of clothing consumes vast quantities of natural resources, including water, energy, and raw materials. Moreover, the disposal of clothing contributes to pollution and landfill overflow, exacerbating environmental degradation. The carbon footprint of the fashion industry rivals that of aviation and maritime shipping combined, making it one of the most significant contributors to climate change. Despite the urgent need to address the environmental consequences of such production-consumption model, SANE Standard face schallenges in addressing overconsumption. This omission stems from the complexity of quantifying and regulating consumer behavior within a certification framework. Unlike tangible measures relating to the production phase, such as the use of chemicals or workers' remuneration , overconsumption is a post-production multifaceted issue influenced by individual choices, societal norms, and cultural factors. #sane #standard #textilecertification #sustainablebrand #sustainablefashion #nogreenwashing

Recycled leather is crafted from discarded leather materials that are shredded and bound together using either synthetic or natural binders, before being pressed into sheets. These leather waste materials are sourced from leftover production materials (scraps and offcuts) or post-consumer goods. To enhance strength and flexibility as needed, additional components such as natural fibers or recycled textiles may be incorporated into the mixture. The resulting composite material is then pressed into sheets or rolls, ready for use in various applications, including fashion, accessories, upholstery, and automotive industries. Recycled leather presents an attractive solution to the environmental challenges associated with traditional leather production. By repurposing waste materials and reducing reliance on virgin resources, recycled leather offers a sustainable alternative that supports waste reduction while minimizing pollution, water, and energy consumption typically associated with conventional leather production. Additionally, the production process of recycled leather emits significantly fewer greenhouse gases compared to conventional leather production. It's important to acknowledge that recycled leather may have reduced durability compared to genuine leather. Furthermore, the overall environmental impact of recycled leather compared to traditional leather depends on the additional materials used and their sourcing. If a large proportion of the final material comprises synthetic materials, it may considerably diminish the environmental benefits, as it increases the carbon footprint and reduces the material's biodegradability. Recycled Leather belongs to SANE Approved Material List. SANE recognizes certifications such as RCS 100 and GRS for recycled leather. For recycled leather not yet certified RCS 100 or GRS, the material production will need to be certified SANE by an accredited certifier. A product made of at least 90% SANE Approved Material and produced in a facility holding a SANE Scope Certificate is eligible to be certified SANE. #sane #standard #textilecertification #sustainablebrand #sustainablefashion #nogreenwashing

How does fashion impact biodiversity The fashion industry has numerous negative environmental consequences, such as water and air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste accumulation. Surprisingly, the impact of fashion on biodiversity often goes unnoticed. Fashion's main "attack" on biodiversity is through the heavy use of chemicals. For example, the toxic substances found in wastewater from processing facilities critically impact rivers and marine life. Additionally, the extensive use of pesticides and insecticides in the cotton industry not only eliminates unwanted pests but also harms many species residing in the soil and the surroundings of cotton plantations. Another reason for the fashion industry's impact on biodiversity lies in the land use required for growing crops and trees used in garment production. In some cases, biodiverse forests are cut down to make these plantations possible. How can more sustainable practices favor biodiversity? Changes in chemical use: It is essential to significantly reduce the use of chemicals, replacing toxic substances with eco-friendly alternatives and ensuring that these chemicals do not find their way into nature through proper wastewater treatment. Better sourcing: Choosing organic cotton over conventional options supports chemical reduction. Additionally, sourcing wood-based fibers like rayon, viscose, and modal from responsibly managed forests can help prevent deforestation and protect biodiversity. Support for Conservation Organizations: Fashion companies can partner with or provide financial support to conservation organizations dedicated to preserving biodiversity. The interconnectedness of biodiversity and fashion stems from the significant impact that production choices can have on ecosystems and wildlife. By adopting eco-friendly practices, supporting conservation efforts, and raising awareness, the industry can contribute to the preservation of biodiversity while meeting the growing demand for sustainable and ethical fashion. SANE Standard requirements enable brands to ensure their production processes protect biodiversity throughout their supply chain.

Since March 2024, SANE Standard is a Signatory of the SLCP Charter. What is SLCP, and what does it mean to be a signatory? SLCP stands for the Social & Labor Convergence Program, a non-profit multi-stakeholder initiative aiming to eliminate audit fatigue in the global supply chain. Over the last 30 years, brands have multiplied the number of standards and social audits, which has led to real fatigue on the manufacturers' side. Each brand has its own code of conduct and its own requirements, and sends another auditor to assess its supplier. As a result, suppliers have to spend a lot of time and money on multiple audits, which they could spend on improving working conditions. SLCP offers a Converged Assessment Framework which is a tool where manufacturers can share SLCP-verified high-quality data on working conditions with as many stakeholders or clients as they wish. It is important to note that SLCP does not score or judge the data; it simply provides verified data that stakeholders can use according to their needs. SANE fully aligns with SLCP's vision and goals. Because audit fatigue and multiple audits represent a real burden for manufacturers, SANE doesn't push for additional audits if it is not necessary and recognizes credible existing standards when their requirements are equivalent. Additionally, as a signatory of the SLCP Charter, SANE accepts SLCP assessments for its own compliance assessment process. SANE commits to using SLCP tools and encourages business partners to do the same. SANE is also pleased to contribute to the development and improvement of SLCP.

In the fashion world, there's a hidden problem affecting the earth. Surprisingly, the fashion industry and soil degradation share an intricate link, posing a significant threat to both humans and the environment. Fashion's demand for cheap, fast fashion has led to the proliferation of monoculture farming. Cotton is a big part of this problem. Large-scale cotton farming uses a lot of artificial fertilizers and pesticides, which harm the soil by taking away important nutrients. This kind of farming also makes the soil weaker, making it easier for erosion to happen. In addition, large-scale grazing practices, especially in regions known for cashmere or wool production, can lead to the removal of protective vegetation, making the soil more prone to erosion. The fashion industry impacts soil health also with the use of harmful chemicals in dyeing and finishing processes. These chemicals can leak into the soil, causing harm to local environments and communities. As soil degradation progresses, it jeopardizes the livelihoods of farmers and threatens global food security. Degraded soil is less capable of retaining water, leading to increased vulnerability to droughts. The loss of arable land limits the capacity to grow essential crops, affecting the supply chain and ultimately impacting human populations worldwide. “When the soil disappears, the soul disappears” - Ymber Delecto, Author Picture: photomix
