Is there a positive outlook on the plastics market in Germany and throughout Europe? 🌍 Last week, sensXPERT's Managing Director Dr. Alexander Chaloupka attended the VDI Jahrestagung Spritzgießen and got a close-up view of both the challenges and the bright spots shaping our industry. The first day kicked off with Michael Weigelt from TecPart - Verband Technische Kunststoff-Produkte e.V., who illustrated a concerning trend: at least half of the companies surveyed have already reduced their workforce—or are planning to—due to lower capacity utilization. Even more worrying, the market outlook suggests further headwinds ahead. Yet there were also inspiring success stories. 🏆 Presentations showcased innovative injection molding concepts and advanced automation solutions that are already driving greater efficiency. Automation companies with global reach, in particular, reported a surge in demand and full order books, highlighting the resilience that comes with diversifying beyond Europe. Afternoon sessions focused on sensor technologies and AI, offering a glimpse into how data-driven intelligence can enhance efficiency in injection molding. We saw many specialized providers, but solutions combining hardware, software, and AI in one integrated approach remain rare. Our biggest takeaway? This holistic approach may be the key to truly revolutionizing how we manufacture plastic components, even if it requires more setup effort than a software solution at the start. Finally, the first day wrapped up with a visionary keynote from the European Space Agency - ESA, featuring their ambitious work on component manufacturing and assembly in space, an exciting reminder that our industry’s future innovations are truly limitless. 🚀 From workforce shifts to AI-powered solutions and even space-bound manufacturing, the VDI Jahrestagung Spritzgießen showcased a dynamic industry at a crossroads. 👉 Where do you see the plastics sector heading next? eVTOLs offer a radically new approach to air mobility. While the prospect of all-electric, rapid mobility is fascinating, OEMs are also facing significant struggles and scepticism in their commercialization efforts. The use of high-performance composite materials enables manufacturers to achieve lightweight structures, maximizing efficiency and range. However, these complex materials also entail very specific challenges. I am excited to participate in a panel on composites in eVTOLs at The EVTOL Show in Stuttgart, hosted by Ilkay Özkisaoglu of Composites Lounge.
