🚀 A Look Back at Two Inspiring Days of Shaping the Future of Medicine 2024 in Leipzig! Together with Prof Uwe Platzbecker and Prof Thomas Neumuth, we are proud to reflect on two days of Shaping the Future of Medicine filled with groundbreaking discussions, innovative presentations, and valuable networking that brought together top minds in medicine, AI, and healthcare transformation. Day 1 of #STFOM- Meeting for Early-Career Researchers: Together with Nico Gagelmann, we kicked off with a dedicated session for the next generation of physicians—Generation XYZ—focusing on the challenges they face in achieving work-life balance and the future of Clinician Scientist programs. These programs will play a critical role in shaping sustainable careers that combine research and clinical practice for the doctors of tomorrow. A highlight of the day was Prof. Ulrike Köhl’s fascinating talk about her personal career journey. She shared how she successfully balanced family and career, leading to her current leadership role, offering valuable insights and inspiration to aspiring the leaders of tomorrow. Day 2 of #STFOM- Digital Health Innovation and Transformation: Day 2 was all about the future of healthcare, highlighting Digital Health #Innovation and the #transformation of #healthcare in Germany and beyond. AI and digital solutions took center stage, with a Keynote from Vivek Natarajan from Google. Vivek presented on the integration of Large Language Models (#LLMs) into daily clinical practice, illustrating how these models can support clinicians in diagnosing, decision-making, and enhancing patient care through AI-driven insights. This revolutionary approach will accelerate the efficiency and quality of healthcare delivery. With Prof Stephen Gilbert we had thought-provoking discussions in various panel sessions. In particular, the panel “How Can We Achieve the Digital Transformation of Medicine and Speed Up Medical Care by Artificial Intelligence in Germany?” featuring Prof. Eyal Zimlichman, MD, Dr Anke Diehl, and Davidi Bachrach sparked new ideas and laid the groundwork for future collaborations and joint projects. In den letzten zwei Wochen hatte ich die Gelegenheit, an zwei äußerst spannenden Veranstaltungen teilzunehmen: „Shaping the Future of Medicine“ in Leipzig, organisiert von Uwe Platzbecker, Thomas Neumuth und Dr. Anne Sophie Kubasch (Fokus: Future of Cancer Care), sowie AI and Electronics for Medicine am Center for Regenerative Therapies (CRTD) der Technische Universität Dresden und dem Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Digital Health. Zentrales Thema bei beiden Veranstaltungen war, wie Large Language Models (#LLMs) und Künstliche Intelligenz (#KI) die Patientenversorgung verbessern können. Der Großteil der Gesundheitsdaten – schätzungsweise 97 % – bleibt bisher ungenutzt. LLMs haben das Potenzial, diese Daten zu strukturieren und wertvolle Erkenntnisse zu generieren. Ärzte könnten so durch die Analyse großer Datenmengen unterstützt werden, um fundierte und personalisierte Entscheidungen zu treffen. Wie Daniel Truhn betonte, kann KI dazu beitragen, diagnostische Verzerrungen zu minimieren und eine personalisierte Behandlung zu ermöglichen. Durch die Integration von KI in patientenzentrierte Apps können Patienten besser informiert und stärker eingebunden werden. Dies könnte insbesondere bei chronischen Erkrankungen oder langfristigen Behandlungen die Patientenbindung und die Therapieadhärenz fördern. Ada Health zeigte hier spannende Einblicke in ihre Lösungen. LLMs bieten nicht nur Vorteile für Patienten, sondern können auch das medizinische Personal entlasten. Routineaufgaben wie die Dokumentation von Patientenakten oder die Zusammenfassung medizinischer Berichte könnten automatisiert werden. Das Thema wurde allerdings auch kritisch diskutiert, denn gerade ethische Aspekte müssen, wie u.a. Dr Anke Diehl mehrfach auf dem Panel betonte, sehr genau betrachtet werden. Ein zentrales Problem bei LLMs ist z.B. das Phänomen der Halluzinationen. Der Einsatz von LLMs muss daher gerade im medizinischen Umfeld noch durch Experten begleitet werden, die die Richtigkeit der von der KI generierten Informationen überprüfen. #zdihealthsolutions #digitalhealth #ai
