I came across an interesting paper called FineTuneBench, which evaluates how well commercial fine-tuning APIs, like OpenAI and Gemini, actually help LLMs learn new knowledge. The results might surprise you—current models still struggle to reliably absorb and generalize new information. The study used four diverse datasets—News, Fictional People, Medical Guidelines, and Code—to test five models (GPT-4, GPT-3.5, Gemini 1.5 Pro, and Gemini 1.5 Flash), which were fine-tuned for 30 epochs. What they found is that while these models can learn new data, updating knowledge is much harder than learning it in the first place. This hybrid setup allows both attention and Mamba (SSM) heads to work together in the same layer, improving how the model processes tasks. On top of that, meta tokens—special trainable tokens added to prompts—help the model focus better. Features like Grouped-Query Attention (GQA) and Rotary Position Embeddings (RoPE) give it a big edge by extending its context length and improving performance. The results speak for themselves: Hymba outperforms other models under 2B parameters, including Llama-3.2, while being trained on significantly less data.
