Medicinal plants and natural products offer unique opportunities in healthcare and drug development. Thus, the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research is dedicated to:
-Work towards a healthier life for humans and animals through developing a more evidence-based use of medicinal natural products.
-Promote research and development in the broad field of natural products. The GA awards and travel grants could be mentioned here, to evidence also the special attention for researchers and scientists from developing areas.
-Provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas related to medicinal natural products (including our annual conferences, e-symposia, workshops, podcasts, etc.).

Mr. Romeo with over 15 years in medicine regulation, currently serves as the Manager of Traditional, Complementary, and Health Products at the National Drug Authority (NDA) of #Uganda. As a pharmacist with an MSc in formulation development, he has led the development of regulatory frameworks for herbal medicine. He has also served as a WHO Temporary Adviser on the Medicines Prequalification Project and efficacy assessment, represented the NDA in the East African Technical Working Group on Drug Safety & Efficacy, and is a member of Uganda’s GARP Working Group, hosted by the Uganda National Academy of Sciences.

Bezalel Dumisani Kanhukamwe, BPharm (University of the Western Cape), MS Biotechnology Innovation Regulatory Science Candidate (Purdue University). As a Regulatory Officer at Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe, Bezalel leads the Complementary Medicines Unit within the Evaluation and Registration Division, ensuring the quality and efficacy of #herbalmedicines, #nutraceuticals, and #traditionalmedicines. He is a certified Clinical Dossier Assessor (University of Witwatersrand) with a strong background in computational drug discovery and pharmaceutical chemistry, holding a postgraduate certificate from Davidson College.

🌱💊 In February 2024, the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA), in cooperation with Pharma Deutschland and the Bundesverband der Pharmazeutischen Industrie (BPI), hosted the "European Herbal Health Products Summit – Which Way Forward?" in Brussels – on the occasion of, among other things, the ongoing revision of European pharmaceutical legislation and the discussions on health claims of herbal food supplements (botanicals).
📝 The consensus on the current challenges for herbal medicines developed by decision-makers from politics, authorities, industry and science was recently published in an open access article in the journal Planta Medica. The article also describes important solutions for securing herbal medicines as part of healthcare in the EU in the future.

I was honored to receive the Best Poster Presentation Award from the GA (Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research) during ICNPR 2024 in Krakow this past July.
Many thanks to the organizers, the award committee, and everyone I had the chance to connect with during the event. This recognition is a great motivator for the future!
I’d also like to acknowledge MARINA KRITSANIDA, my PhD supervisor, for her guidance throughout my doctoral journey.
