A Regen Legend is Retiring. Dr. Christine Jones has influenced so many of us on our journeys to understanding plant-microbial relationships through the liquid carbon pathway. Two heavyweights in their own right, John Kempf and Rick Clark payed homage and shared their recent field day at Rick’s farm with Dr. Jones. Even with the level of knowledge and experience of these two, Dr. Jones blew their minds. I can’t remember the last time I listened to a podcast jammed with gold nuggets as this episode. Here are my top mind blowers 🤯 : - Herbicides are without a question more damaging to soil aggregates than tillage - Shallow tillage immediately followed by a diverse cover crop is better than herbicide - Chopped up fungal hyphae in the top 6” will recolonize the roots much quicker than spores - We over-use legumes in our systems - Legume dominant communities collapse soil structure - There are 9 billion microbes within a seed - What family are your weeds? Plant more of that family - We need a diversity of plant families - Native grasslands were actually diverse “forblands” - We need to be building soil aggregation at depths over 1m - 40” - Forbs build aggregation at depth better than grasses - Everyone with livestock needs fenugreek in their pastures! What strikes me over and over is that no matter who you are, John Kempf, Rick Clark or the most learned academic in the world, there is still SO much to learn, apply in the real world and share with each other.
