🌱 Industrial innovation: A European first at Tiense Suikerraffinaderij! 🌍 Yesterday, Raffinerie Tirlemontoise - Tiense Suikerraffinaderij, part of Südzucker Sugar Division, proudly inaugurated a groundbreaking high-temperature industrial heat pump – the first of its kind in Europe! With a thermal capacity of 4 megawatts and the ability to generate heat up to 140°C, this technology allows us to efficiently reuse waste heat, increasing energy efficiency, reducing CO₂ emissions, and reinforcing a circular production process. Developed by GEA Group and supported by the SPIRIT Horizon Europe Project, this innovation marks a major step in making our sugar production more sustainable while contributing to the CO₂ reduction goals of the Südzucker Group. 🚀 Key impact figures: 🔹 Reduces up to 3000 to 3500 tons of CO₂ emissions annually 🔹 Achieves a Coefficient of Performance of 3.0 – 5.0, delivering up to five times more heat than the electricity it consumes “The installation of this heat pump marks a significant milestone in our journey toward zero CO₂ emissions by 2050," says Jan Ingels, Director of Factories at Tiense Suikerraffinaderij. "This initiative is a vital part of our broader sustainability strategy and aligns with the Südzucker Group’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. It demonstrates our commitment to a greener future and reinforces Tiense Suikerraffinaderij's pioneering role in driving sustainability within the food sector. The project was made possible through collaboration between leading European research and industrial partners. In addition to GEA as the heat pump manufacturer, TNO, the Danish Technological Institute, and Südzucker’s engineering team contributed to its development. This breakthrough sets a new standard for energy-efficient food production and paves the way for wider adoption of industrial heat pump technology across Europe. Our ponds, private areas of the Saint Louis Sucre sugar factory, are a favourite meeting place for Picardy's birdlife! Saint Louis Sucre is part of the Südzucker Sugar Division, which has biodiversity as one of its priorities. The ponds enable more than 700,000 m3 water per year to be stored and returned to farmers to irrigate their crops between June and August, without being taken from the natural environment. In addition to their storage function, our ponds are home to many species of birds that appreciate the peace and quiet and the available food. Every year, Saint Louis Sucre exceptionally opens its doors to the PICARDIE NATURE association, to carry out annual bird counts. Last week, the Picardie Nature association, came to count more than 430 birds and a total of 20 species that live and feed around our Roye reservoirs. The diversity of species found in the Roye ponds makes them a benchmark for professionals in the field. We are proud to contribute in this way to maintaining biodiversity around our sites, while using the water contained in the beet from which the sugar is extracted. #biodiversity #sugarproduction #sugarfactory Photo credit: Odile Plateaux

🌱 Two Sustainability Milestones: Paving the Way to a Carbon-Neutral Future Together We’re happy to share that Raffinerie Tirlemontoise, part of Südzucker Sugar Division, has completed two major sustainability projects! 🎉 These initiatives represent significant strides toward our goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. 🔧 Boiler House Modernization Our boiler house has been completely upgraded with two new steam boilers now boasting an 98% efficiency. By incorporating innovations such as heat recovery from exhaust gases, high-efficiency pumps, and enhanced insulation, we’re reducing CO2 emissions by more than 7,500 tons annually. The new system is also designed with the future in mind, capable of operating on electricity and hydrogen. 💡 Biomethane Injection: Transforming Wastewater into Green Gas Instead of flaring the biogas from our water treatment system, we’re now upgrading it to biomethane. This renewable gas will be injected into the public gas grid by 2025, supplying sustainable energy to up to 500 households. These projects reflect our ongoing efforts towards sustainability, and we’re committed to further reducing our environmental impact. This measure is part of Südzucker Sugar Division's roadmap to a more sustainable future.
