📣 Updates from the SURE-System Technical Committee Following the elections held in early November, Marija Slaidina from Gren has been elected as Chair, and Rens H., Ph.D., from BiomassConsult has been re-elected as Vice-Chair of the Technical Committee. The Technical Committee plays an essential role in the governance of the SURE-System, advising on the technical implementation of the RED criteria. Members of the committee are required to have in-depth technical and professional experience across all relevant economic sectors and a solid understanding of SURE-EU scheme principles. With challenges such as the Revised Energy Directive (RED III) , the Technical Committee provides vital support to SURE during these dynamic times. We also take this opportunity to thank Didzis Palejs from Latvian Biomass Association LATbio and Bioenergy Europe for his valuable contributions and dedication as outgoing Chairman over the past years. The implementation of the 3rd Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) is progressing. On 11th of October 2024, the European Commission sent the voluntary certification schemes, including SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES Verification Scheme, the so-called ‘Assessment Protocol Template’. This document forms the basis for applying for recognition under RED III. SURE is currently working intensively on adapting the SURE-EU scheme principles to the new requirements of RED III. The focus is on the criteria for forest and agricultural biomass, the Union database and GHG calculation. We will submit the adapted SURE-EU scheme principles for recognition by November 04th, 2024, as specified by the EU Commission. Experience shows that the recognition procedure will take some time. We will keep you informed about the status of the recognition procedure and the specific effects on the SURE-EU scheme. Vom 23.-24.09.2024 hatten wir das große Vergnügen auf dem 24. Fachkongress Holzenergie präsent zu sein. Neben dem fachlichen Austausch zu Systemteilnehmenden und Zertifizierungsstellen erwarteten uns spannende Vorträge und Diskussionsrunden von Vertrenden der Politik und Wirtschaft. Man merkt, die Transformation der Branche ist im vollen Gange und zieht große Herausforderungen für Akteuere der Holzwirtschaft mit sich. Die Zertifizierung nach den Nachhaltigkeitskriterien unter der #REDII ist nur ein kleiner Teil dieser Transformation. Auch wir von SURE stehen ständig im Wandel und Spannungsfeldern zwischen EU-Kommission, Zertifizierungsstellen und Wirtschaftsakteuren und versuchen, das Beste für alle Parteien rauszuholen. Ein großes Danke geht an den Bundesverband Bioenergie (BBE) und Fachverband Holzenergie für die wiedermals tolle Organisation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From 23-24 September 2024, we had the great pleasure of being present at the 24th Wood Energy Congress. In between professional dialogue with system participants and certification bodies, we were treated to exciting presentations and discussions with representatives from politics and business. It is clear that the transformation of the sector is in full swing and poses major challenges for players in the timber industry. Certification according to the sustainability criteria under the #REDII is only a small component of this transformation. We at SURE are also constantly in a state of flux and tension between the EU Commission, certification bodies and economic operators and try to get the best out of it for all parties. The Namibia Biomass Industry Group (N-BiG) is a not-for-profit association focused on advancing bioenergy and bio-based products in Namibia. It promotes innovation, technology development, and expertise in bush biomass value chains. N-BiG has 159 active members, including private, public, and academic stakeholders. The organization strengthens the capacity of its members, SMEs, and farming communities to sustainably manage bush biomass and advocates for sustainable bush control to combat bush encroachment in Namibia. In January 2024, N-BiG was appointed as the National Supporting Body for SURE Certification, marking Namibia as the first African country to hold this role.
