How can you enhance your communication skills and ability to work across cultures? 🌏 In his recent post, Peter Franklin shares practical insights into developing intercultural competencies—especially the importance of communication skills when navigating unfamiliar cultural contexts. We had the privilege of exploring these ideas further with Peter as our guest in Episode 22: Global Fitness for Global People on The cultureXchange Podcast. Peter shared actionable advice on managing and leveraging cultural diversity effectively. 🎧 Tune in to the episode here: https://lnkd.in/eadFD5YA Let us know your thoughts in the comments—how do you approach cultural diversity in your work? #InterculturalCommunication #GlobalMindset #CultureXchangePodcast
Interculturalist. Helping people to manage & leverage contextual complexity. Expert on intercultural competence. Professor, speaker, coach, trainer. Board member, SIETAR Germany & SIETAR Europa. Germany- & UK-watcher.
🅷🅾🆆 🅲🅰🅽 🆈🅾🆄 𝓺𝓾𝓲𝓬𝓴𝓵𝔂 🅴🅽🅷🅰🅽🅲🅴 🆈🅾🆄🆁 🅰🅱🅸🅻🅸🆃🆈 🆃🅾 🆆🅾🆁🅺 🅰🅽🅳 🅻🅴🅰🅳 🅰🅲🆁🅾🆂🆂 🅲🆄🅻🆃🆄🆁🅴🆂? And what aspects of intercultural competence can you actually develop? Developing the personal qualities, the values and the attitudes which help you to thrive in unfamiliar cultural contexts and social-groups may take quite a time. But working on communication skills can quickly lead to improved intercultural interactions. The first step is to be fully aware that the intercultural communication channel is likely to be impeded by various obstacles – for example, differing abilities in the chosen lingua franca, often not a first language for any of the parties to the communication. Add to that perhaps, differing, culturally influenced communication styles and a differing familiarity with the context and you may well have a very stony road to both parties understanding completely what the other is talking about. In the video clip below, I talk about how often these easily acquired skills are lacking in the qualification profile of expats and others under pressure to achieve results and perform well in complex contexts far away from the comfort zone of headquarters. It is precisely when you are outside your comfort zone that you need to pay more attention to communicating effectively. Jeremy Comfort and I write about these competencies in our book ᴛʜᴇ ᴍɪɴᴅꜰᴜʟ ɪɴᴛᴇʀɴᴀᴛɪᴏɴᴀʟ ᴍᴀɴᴀɢᴇʀ. ʜᴏᴡ ᴛᴏ ᴡᴏʀᴋ ᴇꜰꜰᴇᴄᴛɪᴠᴇʟʏ ᴀᴄʀᴏꜱꜱ ᴄᴜʟᴛᴜʀᴇꜱ. We list examples of the language of 🅰🅲🆃🅸🆅🅴 🅻🅸🆂🆃🅴🅽🅸🅽🅶 on p. 54 and the language of 🅲🅻🅰🆁🅸🆃🆈 🅾🅵 🅲🅾🅼🅼🆄🅽🅸🅲🅰🆃🅸🅾🅽 on pp. 107-108. The clip is taken from an interview I did for a 40-minute podcast I took part in for the The cultureXchange Podcast in which I was talking to Prof. Dr. Frauke Bender and Marie-Christine Dobro – my thanks go to them. #interculturalcommunication #interculturalmanagement #expats

Informal networks can be a major obstacle to the effectiveness of managers. At the same time though, they can enable and facilitate business activities and support the efficiency and effectiveness of managerial actions. Since informal ties and networks can have a bright and a dark side, it is important for international managers to understand the way they work in the respective cultural context.
