Reflecting on our participation in the SPRIND Funke “EUDI Wallet Prototypes” This summer, we had the great opportunity to participate as one of six teams in the first phase of the innovation competition executed by SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen. In this competition, prototypes were developed for the European Digital Identity (EUDI) wallet – digital wallets that citizens can use to securely store, manage, and present their identity data and official documents on their phones. The planned EUDI wallet represents a decisive step towards creating a secure digital identity that can be used across Europe. It was an exciting opportunity for us to bring our expertise and personal commitment to data protection and secure protocol development into the ongoing conversation about digital identification. 📲 Our prototype focused on two key aspects: decentralization and data minimization. This means that only the absolutely necessary amount of user data is ever shared. Data security and the protection of citizens' privacy were our top priorities. Additionally, we placed strong emphasis on our App’s user experience (UX). We are convinced that a user-friendly process is essential in order to create a truly accessible digital ID solution. Although we are no longer part of the competition, we are pleased to have had the opportunity to contribute to the EUDI wallet project. Building a fully functional wallet prototype as a small team in a short time frame was a challenging task that we took on with full motivation. We look forward to and are closely following the progress and solutions from the other Teams ( 👋 Ubique Innovation, Animo Solutions, Sphereon.com, AUTHADA GmbH). ➡ A few reflections that remain with us from this project: We see UX in the online ID flow as a key challenge for the success of the final wallet solution. Our experience has shown that the initial setup of the ID card can be a significant hurdle that, if not addressed accordingly, has the potential of deterring users from successfully using any form of online authentication. This is why it is crucial to invest sufficient time in UX development and conduct extensive user testing across diverse groups of people. Furthermore, we believe that it is vital for most of the energy and ideas to continue to be directed toward the government-led solution for the EUDI wallet, rather than the privatized one. With such an important product intended to serve a wide population, it is essential that citizens be able to have complete trust in its security and accessibility.
