How to deal with an increasing traffic load? It’s what e-commerce vendors dream of - and also fear, if not prepared properly: A sudden sharp rise in traffic on their website. Will it withstand the high user frequency, or will it collapse under the strain? Our customer Holocafé faced this challenge due to their TV appearance on the German version of Dragons’ Den. We present a knack for a Laravel application to prepare for this very case. Our primary move was to use Cloudflare as an HTTP reverse proxy to cache the main page of the site and other mostly static pages that users were most likely to click on. Compared to the complexity of changing the code of an application not designed for high traffic, this solution proved to be easy to implement. A look at PHP 8.4 through the performance lens! When a new version of PHP is about to be released, discourse often revolves around the changes developers will face. As we’re all about optimizing performance, our approach differs. We take a close look at debugging and operations-related changes. Take the SHA-NI for SHA-256, for example. Our colleague Tim added SHA-NI support for the SHA-256 hash algorithm to PHP core. This improves performance by a factor of 2x to 5x, which is a fantastic gain, making SHA-256 even faster than some of the less secure alternatives, allowing to improve performance and security at the same time. If all closures with a namespace look identical because of a missing source location, debugging becomes a daunting task. If you don't know where the spring in the mountains originates, you won't know where to start looking for a hiker who got lost on the way searching for it. Translated in our special case, this means that troubleshooting is even more challenging if the source location of a closure is not included in the stacktrace. In all versions prior to PHP 8.4, this was the case for closure naming. As a measure of enhancement in PHP 8.4, the closure name now incorporates the source location where it was declared in. Tideways Profiler and Xdebug already had code that included the source location. Tim, who is employed by Tideways, has made a contribution to the PHP core for inclusion in version 8.4. This modification will improve Tideways and other APMs/Exception Tracking tools in places where they use PHP backtrace functionality. However, with the Composer Patches plugin, you can make the necessary changes to the third-party code to fix performance problems. In this blog post, we will look at an example of patching the Symfony ErrorHandler and removing a few thousand deprecations triggered by Shopware to improve performance by 600-700 ms per request. https://lnkd.in/e2ad8xjD
