Wood Pigeon: The Silent Gardener Wood pigeons (Columba palumbus), often underestimated as minor players in ecosystems, are in fact critical contributors to ecological health. These "feathered flying potatoes" play a fundamental role in preserving environmental equilibrium. As natural agents of seed dispersal, wood pigeons facilitate the regeneration of forests and agricultural landscapes. While feeding on seeds, berries, and fruits, they inadvertently scatter seeds across various habitats, promoting the spontaneous growth of vegetation without human intervention. In this capacity, they function as unintentional landscapers, contributing to habitat renewal. Although their primary diet consists of seeds, they occasionally consume insects, snails, and other invertebrates, effectively serving as biological pest control agents. In terms of trophic dynamics, wood pigeons are integral to the food web, serving as prey for apex predators underscoring their significance in maintaining ecosystem stability. Additionally, wood pigeons have exhibited remarkable adaptability to urban environments bringing natural processes into human-dominated landscapes. By dispersing seeds in urban areas, they contribute to the emergence of unexpected greenery, such as plants growing on balconies or within city gardens. The next time you observe a wood pigeon, consider their role as underappreciated environmental contributors, quietly supporting ecosystem sustainability through their daily activities. At tier3 solutions GmbH, our skilled team conducts GLP-compliant studies across Europe, focusing on invertebrates, birds, and mammals. For birds, our studies include detailed observations of feeding behaviour, radio tracking to monitor wildlife movements, and diet composition analysis, among other methods. Our approach ensures accurate data, sustainable solutions, and compliance with current environmental regulations, addressing the specific needs of each project.

RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGE: LADY FARMLAND Did you know that the red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) is a key species in agricultural ecosystems, contributing to both environmental health and ecological balance? Commonly found in Western Mediterranean regions, this bird plays a significant role in biodiversity by controlling pest populations through its diet of seeds, grains, and insects. Its foraging behaviour enhances soil health by scratching and disturbing the surface, which helps aerate the soil and improve water infiltration. This activity also disperses seeds, promoting plant diversity and aiding in reforestation.   As a prey species, the red-legged partridge supports predator populations like hawks and foxes, maintaining ecological balance. Its population trends serve as an indicator of environmental health, reflecting the impact of habitat loss or shifts in farming practices. A decline in their numbers can signal the need for more sustainable agricultural methods. Protecting this species ensures the health and productivity of farming ecosystems. Beyond its ecological role, the red-legged partridge holds cultural and economic significance, particularly in rural areas where it is valued for hunting. Sustainable management of this species benefits both local economies and conservation efforts. Contact us for more information.

Earthworms: Fast food for birds! Did you know that earthworms play a crucial role in the diet and ecosystem support of many bird species? For birds, earthworms are a rich and easy source of protein and nutrients, especially during breeding seasons when high-energy food is essential for raising chicks. Earthworms are abundant in soil, making them an accessible and reliable food source for many bird species. After the rain, you can witness a remarkable scene as many species flock to the cultivated fields in search of this precious and easily accessible bounty. From the small, energetic robin darting across the landscape to the big birds of prey like the common buzzard, these animals are drawn to the freshly exposed ground, teeming with food.   Beyond being a food source, earthworms contribute to soil health by improving its structure, aeration, and nutrient cycling, indirectly benefiting birds. Healthy soil promotes plant growth, which supports a more biodiverse habitat, providing birds with shelter, nesting materials, and additional prey. In short, earthworms are key players in the ecosystem, directly feeding birds and supporting the broader environmental conditions that birds depend on.   At tier3 Solutions, we have an experienced team skilled in conducting studies under GLP conditions across Europe on invertebrates, birds and mammals integrating state-of-the-art technologies and innovative methodologies to deliver precise and reliable environmental assessments. We employ a diverse array of techniques to meet the unique needs of each project. 🐰 Today is the International Rabbit Day! 🐰 Join us to learn a bit more about this little creature: The European rabbit originated in the Iberian Peninsula. It was spread by the Romans across Europe and the Mediterranean around the 1st century B.C. Initially valued for food and fur, rabbits were later introduced to other parts of the world through colonisation and trade. Rabbits are vital to natural ecosystems. They serve as key prey for predators, amongst others for emblematic predatory species such as the Iberian lynx and the Iberian Imperial Eagle. Beyond their role in the food chain, rabbits help regulate vegetation by feeding on various plants, which supports plant diversity. Their burrowing activities improve soil health, aerate the soil, and create habitats for other species. Rabbit populations also indicate environmental health, reflecting habitat and conservation status. Protecting rabbits and their habitats is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem balance. The European rabbit is a key species in risk assessments, requiring field studies to evaluate the effects of plant protection products. At tier3 solutions GmbH, we have an experienced team skilled in conducting these studies under GLP conditions across Europe, using various techniques such as day and night transect counts and point counts as well as trapping, marking and GPS tracking.
