Tourism and the Climate Crisis: Where To Now? This year’s COP (Conference of the Parties) climate summit featured, for the first time in its history, tourism as part of the official Action Agenda. This has helped bring together industry organisations and make a strong call for enhanced climate action in tourism. On the other hand, many delegates representing civil society organizations, Indigenous peoples, and most vulnerable countries shared profound disappointment as the summit failed to deliver ambitious commitments needed to meet the reality of the crisis. Where does this leave us? Feeling frustrated. Calling for change. Re-focusing on local bottom-up actions. In addition to all of those, it’s time for our industry to channel our energy to push for not just enhanced climate action, but also for bold transformations, doing all we can to meet the moment and to create a climate-positive future for our industry. The good news is, solutions already exist. Many are already mobilising. We don't need to (or rather, we can't afford to) wait for there to be a transformative global agreement to push for more action. To spotlight existing and ongoing efforts to enhance climate action and to bring about positive change to the tourism system, here are some of the examples and resources we’ve shared in the past, addressing climate action in travel and tourism. The city of Berlin has an ambitious emissions reduction goal: 70% by 2030 and 90% by 2040. And tourism can be a critical part of this goal. As part of the Sustainable Berlin program by visitBerlin, the "Deep Dive" online workshop series empowers industry stakeholders with knowledge and tools on tangible sustainability steps. Today we co-hosted our third Deep-Dive session (led by Holger and Laura), focused on CO2 measurement - a key challenge many businesses face. Ours is a diverse sector with a wide range of businesses, from small independent hotels to large chain groups, from local restaurants to global logistic companies. But we also have similar opportunities for achieving the shared goal, for example: 💡 Working with existing tools (even though no tool can do everything we need) to start measuring 💡 Integrating footprint measurement-related tasks into the existing workflow 💡 Collaborating within teams (incorporating external inputs where needed) to address priorities 💡 Connecting with other industry colleagues for more inspiration As we discussed during our session today, facilitating opportunities for collaboration is one of the most important ways to empower stakeholders. We’re thrilled to be supporting Sustainable Berlin in this process, and look forward to our 4th session next week!

🌿Sustainability training on sustainability training🌿 In the "Deep Dive" online workshop series by visitBerlin, we are exploring key pain points and areas where businesses need most support, as they work on their Sustainable Berlin journey. Today's session focused on staff training and professional development, featuring expert guidance from our trainers Laura and Holger, a leading local case study by AXICA Eventlocation, and interactive exchange among Sustainable Berlin partner companies, sharing ideas on making learning a key part of sustainability commitment. In addition to technical and practical tips on building good training programs, key highlights of our discussions today were the important ingredients of successful sustainability training, which are all about people: 💡 Knowledge-sharing through personal connections 💡Motivation through team building and networking 💡Engagement through regular communications 💡Continuous improvement through active listening We’ve had the pleasure of working with visitBerlin since last year, and are really excited to be part of the city’s growing sustainability initiative. It’s wonderful to see strong engagement by tourism and MICE stakeholders who form an active community of industry colleagues supporting each other. 💪 🙏 Alexandra Beck, Leonie Umbach, Marie-Luise Genzel, Alexander Pritzkow 🙏 #SustainableTourism #SustainabilityTraining

Our employees are the most important sources of sustainability inspiration and action for our organisations. In addition to effectively engaging staff in sustainability practices within our teams, we can create a ripple effect of positive benefits by actively encouraging staff members to contribute their time and talent to wider social impact and community development initiatives. So what are some of the benefits and opportunities corporate volunteering programs can provide for organisations? Here are some examples - from different industries - highlighting ideas and lessons on employee volunteering. 🏄Patagonia’s Environmental Internship Program offers any employee up to two months of paid time off to work for the environmental group of their choice. "For small, grassroots groups working in local communities, having a free intern is a huge help. And when interns return, they bring back stories, inspiration and a new commitment to our environmental mission." https://lnkd.in/dZn7FhVP 🍻After completing a year-long internal study to better understand employees’ existing community involvement, Creature Comforts Brewing (Georgia, USA) launched an Employee Volunteer Program which also includes customers in company volunteering. https://lnkd.in/d2wzNEEv 🥑The “Planeteers” - team members at Faith in Nature with passion for nature - are employees from across the organisation that actively support community-focused events such as beach cleanups, soap giveaways. Sustainability Report https://lnkd.in/d27uuDGH 🗃️Datagraphic has implemented a corporate volunteering policy. As well as promoting employee engagement, corporate volunteering is “a tool to further engage our staff in achieving our ESG goals". https://lnkd.in/gyMYnFDr ⛩️Inside Travel Group has a Volunteering Leave Policy – one paid day of volunteering leave each year to support environmental and social impact organisations. This resulted in over 270 hours of staff volunteer time in 2022. The Group sets specific targets for % of staff members taking a volunteering leave as well as the total volunteering hours. https://lnkd.in/d2Vyx_FP 🎓EHL Group implements a CSR Purpose Program and engages both students and staff members in volunteer activities around the annual events Solidarity Month and Sustainability Week (centrally managed through an online platform Benevity). EHL's tips for educational organisations include “Allow room for students and staff to bring in their ideas and suggestions, as they are the most likely to motivate each other to join.” https://lnkd.in/dchZZMxe What do you think? What other examples of effective corporate volunteering and staff engagement come to mind?

📣 New case study published! 💡 STOMP (Sustainable Tourism Operations & Measurement Program) is a software solution designed to help small tour operators professionalise and streamline their operations through... ✅ simple and efficient budget, sales, contact and itinerary management tools ✅ easy and transparent reporting of sustainability impacts ✅“Sustainability Receipt” for travellers to see how their money is spent STOMP is an exciting initiative led by Raj Gyawali and Linda Veråsdal at Ethical Travel Portal, highlighting that: ⚙️Small businesses face unique challenges related to their operations. Solutions promoting sustainable business practices need to address these challenges in order to be relevant. ⚙️Local tour operators are key players in responsible travel, supporting local economies and ensuring tourism benefits stay locally. As an industry we need to advocate for a system that supports such local ecosystems by strengthening small businesses. ⚙️Travellers can - and many want to - make purchase decisions that positively impact local communities. It’s up to the industry to make it easier for more travellers to do so. ⚙️Sharing sustainability and local impact data transparently is good business. Travellers appreciate having access to easy-to-understand data on where their money goes, and are more likely to trust those operators that communicate transparently about costs and impacts. 👉Read the case study to learn more: "Sustainability Performance Measurement as Part of Business Operations: STOMP Case Study" https://lnkd.in/d-7w5eiC #TrainingAid4Tourism #Sustainability #TourOperators #TourismSMEs #SustainableTourism #SustainabilityReporting #SustainabilityCommunication #SustainabilityManagement #SmallBusiness #SustainableTravel #ResponsibleTravel
