On February 7, 2025, the U Bremen Research Alliance organized another meeting of the Peer-to-Peer Network Artificial Intelligence - a platform for experienced researchers from #UBRA member institutions aimed at advancing AI research and its applications. This time, Prof. Dr. Tanja Schultz - on behalf of the Cognitive Systems Lab (CSL) at the Universität Bremen - invited participants to introduce the Biosignals-HUB. The formation of the Antarctic Ice Sheet occurred differently than was previously assumed. An international team led by U Bremen Research Alliance researchers made a surprising discovery using a unique drill core and elaborate modeling methods. The drill core was obtained during a 2017 expedition to West Antarctica with the Polarstern research vessel by the Alfred Wegener-Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). The innovative approach that enabled the drill core retrieval is the MeBo70 seabed drill rig which was developed by the MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen. For the sedimentologist Dr. Johann Philipp Klages (AWI), MARUM’s MeBo70 is a good example of how the individual members of the U Bremen Research Alliance complement and strengthen each other’s work. Diese überraschende Entdeckung hat ein internationales Team unter Leitung von Forschenden der U Bremen Research Alliance mithilfe eines einzigartigen Bohrkerns und aufwendiger Modellierungen gemacht. Der Bohrkern wurde bei einer Expedition mit dem Forschungsschiff „Polarstern“ in die Westantarktis im Jahr 2017 vom Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung (AWI) gewonnen. Das Konzept für eine technische Innovation, ohne die der Bohrkern gar nicht hätte gehoben werden können, stammt vom MARUM der Universität Bremen: das Meeresboden-Bohrgerät MeBo70. Yesterday (January 15, 2025), the UBRA Data Train Program 2025 was kicked off and presented to about 200 participants (both on-site and online) at the #UBRA member institution Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) GmbH! The annual kick-off event serves to introduce the Data Train program and to facilitate networking among Bremen's stakeholders and participants. New year - new research proposal? How to write professional and competitive proposals for the European research framework program Horizon Europe - that is presented this morning (January 9, 2024) by Dr. Sean McCarthy, who has more than 30 years of experiences in all aspects of European research. The fully booked workshop, organized by the U Bremen Research Alliance (UBRA) and the Uni Bremen/Dr. Andrea Gottlieb, kicked off with a welcome address by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Fechte-Heinen, Deputy Chairperson of UBRA. The participants are now diving into strategies to boost their chances of success in Horizon Europe calls. Ausklang und Ausblick: Zum Ende des Jahres 2024 fand am 18. Dezember die Mitgliederversammlung der U Bremen Research Alliance (#UBRA) statt. Die Mitgliedseinrichtungen zogen ein positives Fazit – viel wurde erreicht und die Weichen für die Zukunft gestellt. Unter anderem durch die turnusmäßige Wahl des Vorstands. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Fechte-Heinen wurde als stv. Vorstandsvorsitzender und Oliver A. Dreher als weiteres Vorstandsmitglied bestätigt. Für die Amtszeit 2025 und 2026 bilden sie gemeinsam mit Prof. Dr. Jutta Günther (Vorsitzende) und Frauke Meyer (Schatzmeisterin) die Leitung der U Bremen Research Alliance.   At the end of 2024, the general meeting of the U Bremen Research Alliance (#UBRA) took place on December 18. The member institutions took stock of the progress made so far—much has been accomplished, and the course for the future has been set. This included the regular election of the board. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Fechte-Heinen was re-elected as Deputy Chairperson of the Board, and also Oliver A. Dreher was re-elected as a board member. For the 2025–2026 term, they will jointly form the executive board of the U Bremen Research Alliance together with Prof. Dr. Jutta Günther (Chairperson) and Frauke Meyer (Treasurer). We're taking this delightful milestone as an opportunity to start our ☕ UBRA Coffee Break Interview ☕ series - with Saskia. The research hub Bremen is diverse and interconnected across UBRA institutions in an interdisciplinary way. Saskia is one of approximately 6,500 employees working at UBRA member institutions. She is a PostDoc at the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS, one of UBRA's 13 member institutions. 1. Saskia, what is your field of research, and what are you currently working on? In my research, I investigate inequalities in access to and use of digital health technologies and develop strategies to reduce these inequalities, aiming to achieve equitable healthcare for all. Over the past two years, I have conducted a mixed-methods study with colleagues on digital health literacy and the use of digital health technologies among adults with low reading and writing skills. The findings of this study are now being incorporated into developing an intervention to promote digital health literacy for adults with low reading and writing skills.   2) Do you conduct interdisciplinary research? If yes, in what way? Yes, I work within the Leibniz ScienceCampus Digital Public Health Bremen, an interdisciplinary research network that includes scientists from Leibniz-Institut für Präventionsforschung und Epidemiologie – BIPS, Universität Bremen, Fraunhofer MEVIS, Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg, and OFFIS - Institut für Informatik. The disciplines represented include Public Health, Epidemiology, Sociology, Psychology, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Philosophy, and Law, among others. For instance, with colleagues from the University of Bremen, I co-developed DigiPHrame, a framework for developing and evaluating digital public health interventions (doi: 10.2196/54269, https://lnkd.in/eDz68ZGs). An interdisciplinary research team created the framework comprising 182 questions organized into 12 domains. It is designed to serve as a checklist to support digital public health interventions’ development and evaluation process.   3) Why have you stayed in/come to Bremen? I studied Health Sciences at the University of Bremen and have worked as a researcher at the Leibniz Institute BIPS for several years. In addition to the excellent research opportunities in Public Health offered by the many research institutions here, I appreciate that Bremen is a big city with a small-town feel. Distances are short, and many things can be done by bike.
