Private Sector Mission to Central Africa – follow up visits already planned! The ITPO Germany Private Sector Mission to Central Africa wraps up – and the participating companies are already planning follow-up visits in the months to come. After 9 days filled with back-to-back meetings, site visits and investment round tables, the entrepreneurial drive was unmistakable at the B2B session in Libreville, which - thanks to the incredible support of Chambre de Commerce du Gabon – attracted 100 participants and gave the opportunity to raise awareness for new technologies in different sectors. A workshop with local entrepreneurs in Sao Tome, supported by REINA INCUBADORA, and on-site meetings with local producers showcased how important it is to find technology solutions that take specific local needs into account. Entrepreneurs from the diaspora , financing and investment experts from Germany as well as larger corporates such as Bosch, WILO or GEA are willing to contribute to the diversification of the economies and to create business opportunities with their technology and knowledge. With local companies ramping up their capacity for food processing and new players rolling out new projects, the German companies plan to return in the next months and take the business connections further towards concrete business projects in Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe.

This is how the European Private Sector Mission organized by UNIDO ITPO Germany to Nigeria (19-26 November) fostered sustainable solutions for the palm oil industry 🌴 The palm oil sector can be a driver of industrial development, economic self-sufficiency and food security in Nigeria. In the 1960s, the country was world market leader in palm oil production 📈, but currently has to import about one third of its domestic demand (600,000 metric tons). The business delegation, which consisted of 10 European and 1 Malaysian company, visited the South-South Region (Cross River and Akwa Ibom States) and Lagos and covered the whole value chain: - Efficient, high-yielding and robust palm oil seedlings (Xavier LACAN, PalmElit 🇫🇷) - Investments, development and management of palm oil plantations (Dr Shermal Perera, AgriNexus International, 🇲🇾) - Biomass utilization, production of furniture from old palm trunks (Dr. Stefan Möhringer, Simon Möhringer Anlagenbau GmbH 🇩🇪) - Waste water and sludge (POME) management (JP Wienold, Sludge Management Company Ltd. 🇩🇪) - Palm wine and spirits production (Stephan Rabich, PALMS GmbH 🇩🇪) - Refining technology (Gian Luigi Sanna, Andreotti Impianti S.p.A 🇮🇹 / SBA Group 🇳🇬) - Palm oil mills (Joris De Nocker, RENTEC n.v. - BELGIUM 🇧🇪) - Pumps and plant engineering (JOHN GBADEGESIN, Solomon Ntiejum, KSB Nigeria 🇩🇪 / Francis Omoniyi, Ayodele Smart, GEA Group) - Packaging solutions (Piotr Dlugosz, Serac 🇫🇷 / Amith Sukhnundan, Samuel Ominyi Ochi, SBA Group 🇳🇬 / Amb. Ahmed Alex Omah, WPO World Packaging Organisation) In addition to visiting several palm plantations, mills, and refineries, e.g. at Lagos Free Zone (Tolaram) (Chinju Nwankwo Udora, Madhukar Khetan) and PZ Wilmar (Anoop Sharma) in Ikorodu, the delegation met with government representatives and hosted two networking receptions in Calabar (Cross River) and Uyo (Akwa Ibom) respectively, and organized a financing & investment event in Lagos with larger oil palm producers and financing institutions. The oil palm is native to Nigeria and is cultivated since hundreds of years. It serves multiple purposes and can be used as cooking oil, supplement in the food industry, for soap production, cosmetics and more. For many families it is essential to ensure food security. In Europe, the discussions are different: Due to heavy deforestation and environmental problems, there are efforts to replace palm oil with alternatives. However, according to WWF, a substitution with alternatives could cause even more environmental harm because the oil palm is the most productive crop to produce edible oil and needs about 5-times less land than crops like soy, rape, sunflower or coconuts. Considering a growing population and land-use issues worldwide, it is rather a question of how to cultivate oil palms in a sustainable manner and ensure to minimize its environmental impact.

🌍Full house: over 150 companies at Cameroonian-German Investment Forum Despite their differences in GDP and population size, all Central African countries share the same objective: Develop new value chains, lower dependency on imports and create new jobs. The region already benefits from the engagement of the diaspora community, whose members have invested in anything from industrial bakeries to engineering firms and BPO services. Several forward-looking German Companies have also set up regional clusters to allow for short supply chains and local value creation. In its current Private Sector Mission to Central Africa, ITPO Germany is cooperating with the regional representatives of German companies as well as members of the diaspora. Starting in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, the group met with government authorities and business organizations, which helped to establish contacts with local investors and companies in the infrastructure, food processing and energy sector. Over in Cameroon, more than 150 local companies participated in an investment round table, a finance workshop and a B2B matchmaking event. All this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the UNIDO Regional Office in Yaoundé and partners like UNDP, Agentur für Wirtschaft und Entwicklung, @German Embassy Yaoundé, @CCIMA and @GECAM. We are impressed by the efforts of local entrepreneurs as well as city mayors from remote parts of Cameroon to travel long distances in order to create new partnerships. There is no chicken and egg problem – just a lot of opportunities at EuroTier 2024 🐔 The poultry sector is an important industry in terms of sustainability and nutritional value to feed a growing population, combining food security with sustainability. Did you know that the CO2 footprint and GHG emissions of chicken meat production has been reduced by over 75% since that 1960s and is amongst the lowest of all commodities, using 58% less water and 72% less water than before? Or, that chicken meat makes up only 1,5% of global share of agricultural production to GHG emissions, compared with 35% for ruminant meat (cattle) and 30% for human crop production? This year, the leading international trade fair for professional animal farming and livestock management also hosts the 'World Poultry Show' and 'EnergyDecentral' exhibition focusing on biogas and renewable energy technologies. UNIDO ITPO Germany organized the visit of 16 representatives from 7 African countries active in the poultry and biogas sectors. The participants from Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo and Zambia used the time in Hanover to connect with new potential partners from Europe, explore new innnovative solutions. In addition to participating in EuroTier Trade Fair, the delegation visited a larger farm in Lower Saxony and had the chance to exchange with agritech-company RIELA Karl-Heinz Knoop e.K., a supplier of dryers, silos and feed mills in many African markets. On Friday, 15 November, the group visited a German School of Agricultural Engineering from DEULA Nienburg and Larvae Solutions GmbH, a company producing technology for the usage of larvae for chicken feed. Thank you to Benjamin Knell, MBA, Inna Njanjo from INZAG Germany GmbH for presenting their suited financing solutions for African markets and to Axel Hilckmann for engaging with the group in regards to sustainability in the poultry sector!
