“Why does sustainability always start in the mind?” speaker and neuroscientist Maren Urner asked at our recent Climate Talks event, encouraging reflection on the kind of input we allow into our brains in today’s information society. Just like last year the event took place at the same time as the UN Climate Change Conference COP29. This year the event features a unique element: Elevator Pitches where each department could present relevant ongoing or completed business projects in a few minutes. One ‘pitch’ featured green projects presented by our colleagues in sustainability for example. We had the opportunity to engage in insightful discussions and learn from top experts about the impact of climate change on health and mental resilience, and how our lives are changing in the face of this challenge. Do you want to be part of future discussions and contribute to shaping a cleaner future? We are looking for passionate, talented individuals who want to make a real impact in the energy transition. #ClimateTalks #Sustainability #Training #ClimateProtection #CorporateStrategy

Yet another step towards accelerating the energy transition in Europe! We’re excited to announce that we’ve entered into a long-term power purchase agreement with Stegra to supply 6 TWh of electricity between 2027 and 2032. This electricity will power Stegra’s plant in Boden, Northern Sweden, enabling large-scale production of green hydrogen, green iron, and green steel. The plant’s 700MW electrolysis facility will produce green hydrogen, which will reduce iron ore into green sponge iron to feed Stegra’s production of 2.5 million tonnes of green steel annually, starting in 2026. “We are proud to support the ongoing transition of the energy system by being a reliable and innovative partner to industrial off-takers,” says Johan Svenningsson, Country Chairman at Uniper Sweden. At Uniper, we remain committed to being a reliable partner for industrial transformation - delivering flexible and reliable energy solutions that enable our customers to reduce industrial emissions and achieve their decarbonization goals. #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #GreenHydrogen #CarbonNeutrality #IndustrialTransformation #TheBeatingHeartofEnergy #PPA

To keep it short: Delivering sustainable, affordable energy while ensuring security of supply is no small task. Achieving net-zero in Europe by 2050 requires clear and reliable framework conditions, cost-efficient decarbonization instruments like the EU ETS, and investments in dispatchable power generation and energy storage – from batteries to hydrogen. To make this vision a reality, the EU and its Member States must swiftly approve capacity remuneration mechanisms. But simply hoping for progress won’t be enough. At Uniper, we are committed to supporting industrial decarbonization with bespoke solutions like CCS/U, renewable hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels, ensuring both decarbonization and security of supply. Reliable financing is crucial – developing the hydrogen market will take years. It’s time to replace wishful thinking with pragmatism! 🤝 Being part of this panel at the European Business Summits was a great experience. Thanks to Olivier Guersent, Leena Yla-Mononen, Nicoló Giacomuzzi-Moore, Przemysław Jastrzębski, and Ana Rovzar! I look forward to seeing you again! 🙏“ #TheBeatingHeartOfEnergy #EnergyTransition #GreenHydrogen #ebs2024 #EUH2Week2024

Quo vadis Hydrogen? At Uniper, we are committed to #hydrogen and are working on advancing some of our flagship projects like the ammonia import terminal in Wilhemshaven, Germany. But it seems we are moving from a hydrogen hype (H2 is the answer to everything) to a hydrogen depression (too risky, too expensive). Thus, now is the time for policymakers and industry alike to stay positive, get things moving and remove the barriers. Pragmatism must lead our way forward. Policymakers must stay committed to the decarbonisation pathway and ensure a regulatory framework that supports and accelerates hydrogen investments. Regulatory stability and predictability are of crucial importance to create a reliable hydrogen market – especially for first movers to create a financial incentive to invest. 🔑 What we need: • A pragmatic approach to the production of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, including a targeted revision of the Delegated Act for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) before 2028. • Support mechanisms like the European Hydrogen Bank or H2Global to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen. • A holistic European hydrogen import strategy to unleash its full decarbonisation potential in Europe. To ensure a successful implementation of the EU hydrogen targets, Member States will have to consider the unique characteristics of their national industry and hydrogen sectors. The focus must now be on a pragmatic, swift application on national level. 🇪🇺💪 European Hydrogen Week is an ideal platform to exchange ideas, address challenges, and work collaboratively towards practical solutions. Thank you, Mechthild Wörsdörfer, Maarten Wetselaar, Stefano Innocenzi, Mohammad Abdelqader, and a special thanks to Dr. Sopna Sury Sury for the outstanding moderation of the panel discussion today! It’s thanks to the insights of industry and political leaders that we’re pushing boundaries in hydrogen innovation. Together, we’re laying the foundation for a resilient hydrogen market and a greener future. #TheBeatingHeartOfUniper #EnergyTransition #GreenHydrogen #HydrogenNow #EUH2Week2024

Hydrogen will play a crucial role in reaching climate neutrality in Europe by 2050 by decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors and combining environmental advantages with security of supply. We’re excited to take another significant step towards Germany’s hydrogen future by selecting Electric Hydrogen as our exclusive partner for the design of a 200 MW #electrolyzer plant for large-scale electrolysis. This state-of-the-art facility will be part of our #GreenWilhelmshaven project in Northern Germany, transforming the site of a former coal-fired power plant into a hub for green energy. The electrolyzer, powered by renewable wind energy, will produce zero-carbon green hydrogen for industrial customers in sectors like chemicals, steel, and transport. What makes this partnership stand out is Electric Hydrogen’s advanced proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology, which offers low-cost, integrated solutions to make large-scale hydrogen production efficient and viable. Their innovation complements our vision to decarbonize industries while ensuring secure and affordable energy supplies. “We aim to drive the efforts to decarbonize German and European industry. Uniper’s hydrogen project is a cornerstone of our plans to shape the energy transition”, says Susanne Thöle, Director of Hydrogen for Uniper. “We want to be the most trusted partner for policymakers, industry and society on how to make Europe’s energy supply secure, affordable, and steadily greener.” With this milestone, we are another step closer to realizing a sustainable energy future for Germany and beyond. #TheBeatingHeartOfEnergy #Hydrogen #Wasserstoff #EnergyTransition

Exciting Day with Tech Students from RWTH Aachen! Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of talented tech students from RWTH Aachen University to our headquarters! They got a first-hand look into our Trading department, where energy is bought and sold to serve our customers across the globe. Our team members from Trading shared insights about their roles, what makes their jobs so exciting, and the wide range of opportunities available in this dynamic field. The students had the chance to dive deep, ask questions, and explore the heart of energy trading – plus, they even got an exclusive tour through our Trading floor! To wrap up, we headed to a VR gaming hall for some informal fun! Between the games, pizza, and drinks, we enjoyed great conversations and had the chance to connect on a more personal level, far away from the usual recruiting format. A huge thanks to the students for their curiosity and energy, and to our Trading team for sharing their passion. We look forward to staying in touch and, who knows, maybe even working together in the future! Would you like to know what kind of entry-level positions we offer for students? Take a look at our careers page. You will find the link in the first comment. #CareerOpportunities #JoinUs #TheBeatingHeartOfEnergy

While I couldn’t be there in person in Baku, it was such a pleasure to connect today with conference Chair Nik Gowing at the COP29 Azerbaijan Hydrogen Transition Summit! We had a great discussion about the potential and opportunities for the hydrogen economy. At Uniper, we're committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. Green gases such as hydrogen are essential for decarbonising the energy system, supporting climate neutrality while ensuring security of supply. Over the past year, however, we've seen challenges emerge in the market environment. Slower regulatory development and the reluctance of governments and industry to pay a premium for green products have affected progress. Projects need a viable business case. Where there is no working market, we need clear regulatory support and consistent government incentives, at least for the ramp-up period. Without regulatory clarity and long-term government commitment to closing the cost gap between grey, green and blue hydrogen, the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy will be slow. We must incentivise hydrogen at a level that allows the market to grow, overcoming barriers to accelerate the hydrogen economy’s rollout. Summits like COP29 and events like the Hydrogen Transition Summit are vital for these discussions. Thanks to everyone involved for an inspiring exchange – this only strengthens our commitment to Uniper’s green transformation!
