The Additive Manufacturing Working Group invites you to the Showcase Area (12.0 Stand B01) at Formnext - Where ideas take shape in Frankfurt (19.-22.10.2024). The Direct Manufacturing Research Center (DMRC) - Paderborn University with the UPBracing Team show an electric Formula Student racing car. The DMRC is bringing the PX424E, an electric Formula Student racing car from the UPBracing Team, to the showcase area at Formnext. The total power is 80KW, the torque is 1000 Nm and the total weight is 182.5 kg. Lightweight construction in this manner would not be possible without the additive manufacturing (AM) processes used. 🔦 Many components of the suspension system are topology-optimized and manufactured using the selective laser melting (SLM) process to keep the weight low. Metal is only applied in areas where forces act. 🔦 The fused deposition modeling (FDM) process is used, among other things, to produce negative molds, which in turn are used to create components made from carbon fiber. As a result, all wings of the PX424E weigh only approximately 12 kg. Additionally, some connectors, housings, parts of the battery, and many prototypes have been created using this process. 🔦 Components with complex geometries that are not subjected to high forces are produced using the selective laser sintering (SLS) process. This includes, for example, air intakes or internal stiffening elements in the wings. 🔦 The stereolithography (SLA) process has been primarily used in areas where water tightness and/or high-temperature resistance are required. All components share the fact that they are manufactured in very small quantities, which makes almost all other manufacturing processes economically unfeasible. #additivemanufacturing
