UPM Biochemicals takes the production of wood-based renewable biochemicals from idea to reality. The UPM biorefinery, which is currently under construction in Leuna, will be producing bio-based glycols, renewable functional fillers, lignin, and industrial sugars and is planned to ramp up by the end of 2024. UPM will use wood to the molecular level and produce sustainable chemicals used in products of our everyday lives. This new business will support the transformation of UPM as it will drive the transformation of our society towards a more sustainable lifestyle - true to UPM’s vision to innovate for a Future Beyond Fossils.

🏅 Outerwear manufacturer VAUDE’s partially wood-based fleece jacket inspired voters in the 'New Wood' competition! The audience voted online on the world’s first partially bio-based fleece jacket as runner up in the best new product innovation. The resin used to make the polyester in the jacket contains UPM BioPura™ BioMEG, is a drop-in solution that can be easily implemented into existing polyester manufacturing processes Petri Hyyryläinen, Vice President Strategy at UPM Biorefining, was happy to collect the diploma last Friday at the Forest Days event in Helsinki. 👕 Approximately 60% of all materials currently used by the fashion industry are made from fossil-based polymers. While there is a need for synthetic polymers especially for key performance materials it is hoped that this prototype will inspire and motivate brands to exit fossil-based materials for more sustainable bio-based solutions. 🤝 As the textile industry needs to reduce waste and the use of fossil raw materials, the wood-based textiles - such as polyester fleece used in the VAUDE jacket - are a key solution in making this possible, and UPM Biorefining is leading the way. Why is the award-winning Green Step Ligna concept tire from our partner Nokian Tyres plc such a revolution for the #tire industry? The answer is simple: It is the very first tire that includes our unique UPM BioMotion™ Renewable Functional Fillers (RFF), a lighter weight, 100% renewable alternative to traditional CO₂-intensive fillers. 🛞 Functional fillers represent approximately 30% of a tire and consist of materials such as primarily carbon black and precipitated silica.
