We offer innovative solutions for the glass industry: Vitrum Technologies is a mechanical engineering company focusing on forming and production systems for the glass industry. Vitrum Technologies is a spin off from the Aachen-based Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT (Fraunhofer IPT). Equipment currently used for the production of such 3D formed glass is reaching its process-related limits. Vitrum Technologies' goal is to develop process developments and machine technology for these applications. Worldwide, there is an increasing demand for thin glasses in technically more and more sophisticated shapes and thicknesses. We provide both, mold tools for non-isothermal glass molding (NGM) as well as for isothermal precision glass molding (PGM). A wide range of geometric features are available: aspherical and free-form lenses, wafer-level inserts, multi-cavity tools. Wear-reducing protective coatings to increase the service life of the tools are available as an option. The protective coatings can be re-applied multiple times to increase the life cycle of the tools. Vitrum Technologies GmbH is happy to announce to be a partner of the EffF3D project to develop a thermal forming process to integrate surface structures on curved display cover glass. This step will eliminate the chemical edging process and reduce the carbon footprint of glass forming. Vitrum Technologies’s “Non-isothermal Thin Glass Forming Machine” has four different built-in forming processes: - Gravity Slumping - Vacuum Assisted Slumping - Deep Drawing - Press Bending Vitrum Technologies can offer the optimal hotforming machine for your application to form glasses into the desired shape and accuracy in a thickness range from 80 µm to several millimeters. 💡 Cost-effective functionalization of glass surfaces without harmful chemicals and less CO2 emission: In our research project "EffF3D", we are developing a new process chain for the mass production of complex-shaped and functionalized thin glasses, such as those used in displays. The concept is based on two technological pillars: the upstream structuring of glass blanks through laser structuring and subsequent non-isothermal glass forming. 🌳 In contrast to conventional manufacturing methodologies, our novel process chain not only reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions by more than 60 percent each but also completely eliminates the need for environmentally detrimental chemicals. The new method is also expected to be around 50 percent cheaper than conventional processes. In initial experiments, our research team successfully introduced so-called AntiGlare structures into the glass surface, which reduce glare on the display glass. Typically, each glass has an etched AntiGlare structure. We have discovered a structure that can be efficiently implemented using lasers. ☀️ Next, we plan to also use the laser to introduce haptic structures, such as buttons on the center console in automobiles.
