PROTECTING SIERRA LEONE`S BIODIVERSITY IN LOMA MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK ➡ In the heart of Sierra Leone, the Loma Mountains National Park (LMNP) not only boasts West Africa’s highest peak but also shelters rare and endangered wildlife, including the critically endangered western chimpanzee. However, satellite data show a significant challenge: the park lost 6% of its primary forest cover between 2002 and 2023. ➡ Conservation efforts are well underway to counter this trend. Local communities, conservationists, park officials, and international agencies are collaborating through initiatives such as reforestation, ranger training, school programs, and developing alternative livelihoods for those in surrounding areas. ➡ LMNP spans 33,201 hectares and includes a diversity of ecosystems—from montane forests to savanna—each supporting species like the red and black colobus monkeys, Jentink’s duikers, leopards, and forest elephants. The park also hosts unique bird species found nowhere else in Sierra Leone, with five globally threatened. ➡ Among LMNP’s most iconic residents is the western chimpanzee. A 2019 survey by Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary estimated the population at 1,390 individuals, underscoring the park's role in conserving this vulnerable species. GLOBAL MEDIA BIAS COSTS AFRICA`S ECONOMY BILLIONS ANNUALLY ➡ A recent study reveals that Africa loses up to $4.2 billion each year in inflated sovereign debt interest due to negative media stereotypes. ➡ The research by Africa Practice and Africa No Filter shows that global media coverage, particularly during elections, often focuses on conflict, corruption, and poverty, heightening perceptions of risk for investors. ➡ This "prejudice premium" leads to higher borrowing costs, even for nations with decent credit ratings. Beyond debt, the negative portrayal obscures Africa’s commercial opportunities and stifles sectors like tourism and foreign investment. 🌍 Through our media work with Voice4Africa, we aim to counter negative stereotypes about the African continent in the German-speaking market by showcasing the diversity, innovation and inspiring stories that truly represent its spirit.
