🌬️ Good news for wind energy in Europe: Wind covers 20 per cent of electricity demand 🌍 Wind Europe today published the latest figures on the development of wind energy in Europe. Europe installed a total of 16.4 GW of new wind energy capacity in 2024, bringing the total capacity to 285 GW. This means that wind energy covers 20% of Europe's electricity demand. ⭐️ The highlights of the report: Current figures · Wind energy covered 20% of Europe's electricity demand in 2024 · Europe installed a total of 16.4 GW of wind energy in 2024, 84% of which were onshore wind turbines · A cumulative 285 GW of wind energy capacity is installed in Europe, of which 248 GW is onshore wind power Country-specific developments: · 🇩🇪 With an addition of 4 GW of new wind power capacity, Germany leads the list. The UK, France, Finland, Turkey, Spain and Sweden all installed more than 1 GW. · The share of wind energy in electricity consumption in Europe is now 20 %, in 🇩🇰 Denmark even at an impressive 56 %. Eight other countries, including Germany, the UK and the Netherlands, obtained at least a quarter of their electricity from wind power. Investments and future prospects: · In 2024, € 32 billion was invested in new wind farms, which corresponds to 20 GW of new capacity. · Europe has awarded more new wind power capacity in state auctions than ever before, with 37 GW (29 GW of which in the EU) · Wind Europe forecasts that Europe will install 187 GW of new wind power capacity in the period 2025-2030, of which around 140 GW will be in the EU. This would increase total installations in Europe and the EU to 450 GW and 351 GW respectively by 2030. ⏱️ Repowering in fast forward Have you ever seen how an 85 metre high wind turbine, which has produced environmentally friendly electricity for over 20 years, is dismantled in just a few seconds? We have recorded the dismantling of one of our ageing ‘veterans’ in a time-lapse. This aged turbine is one of two wind turbines that Volkswind has dismantled as part of a repowering programme. The two old turbines have done a good job over the years and supplied around 900 average German 4-person households with electricity every year. But now it is time to make room for progress and innovative technologies. A new, modern wind turbine is to be erected in place of the old turbines. This will be able to supply three times as much electricity while halving the number of turbines. Replacing ageing wind turbines with modern, more efficient systems brings numerous benefits - for the environment, the economy and society: ➡️ More efficient energy generation: Modern wind farms increase electricity production with fewer turbines. ➡️ Acceptance and sustainability: Established sites often enjoy broad public approval, which makes new projects easier. Parts of the infrastructure can often be reused. ➡️ Modern technology, less pollution: New wind turbines are quieter, turn more quietly and have needs-based night-time labelling. ➡️ Wildlife protection: Higher turbines protect endangered bird and bat species that fly at lower heights. ➡️ A key contribution to the energy transition: Repowering increases the efficiency of our wind farms and is an important component of the energy transition. Fewer turbines, more power and more protection for nature. 💡 Quick dismantling Another benefit of wind energy: it only took two days to dismantle the turbine. Once the foundations have been excavated, the land is ready for agricultural use again.
