Hello everyone. Back at my desk from the #WindTurbineBlades conference in Düsseldorf, I've had time to reflect a little on what I saw there. All the operators, inspectors, certifiers and, to some extent, blade developers present told the same story: numerous large blades, especially the latest generations, are showing significant structural damage after a few years of operation. These blades are designed to last 20 or 25 years and have undergone extensive certification and fatigue testing. Yet compared to older, smaller blades, the failure rate and maintenance costs are many times higher than expected. How can this be? Of course, the enormous increase in length is also a major challenge for production quality, and that certainly plays a role. But production is not always to blame! We can reconstruct and calculate the error patterns shown. We can design blades that remain free of these defects.
