What do you see in these pictures? Green gentrification or the implementation of "Nature-Based Solutions" (NBS) in urban spaces? Share your thoughts and experiences! We're interested in NBS—a concept in urban studies that involves planning strategies inspired by nature. For city planners, understanding NBS can be challenging. Does it mean greening public spaces, creating blue and green infrastructures, or mitigating climate impacts? Additionally, few studies have explored the effects of NBS on housing inequalities, such as affordability and accessibility issues for lower- and middle-income groups. Who are we? #ReHousIn is an international Horizon Europe project. We aim to analyze the concept of NBS and its impact on housing. How does NBS contribute to sustainable housing? Are they ever used to promote unsustainable outcomes like green gentrification or rising rents? We are investigating these questions across 9 countries and 27 case study locations in Europe. At a time when cities worldwide struggle with soaring housing prices and accessibility crisis, the City of Vienna stands out with a remarkable achievement: its social housing system. It started with the “Red Vienna” governement during the First Republic and their principles: affordability, high quality, social cohesion and a good social mix. However, even this successful system faces modern challenges, with rising costs and new pressures requiring continuous adaptation and care. 📣 Exciting news! The European Parliament has just passed a groundbreaking Nature Restoration Law, aiming to restore 20% of the EU's land and seas by 2030. 🇪🇺 But what could restoring 20% of Europe's land and seas look like? 🌳 Reforestation & Afforestation: Planting over 3 billion trees across Europe to recover vast areas of deforested and degraded land. 🐸 Wetlands Restoration: Reviving over 1 million hectares of drained wetlands, to boost biodiversity, purify water and lock-in carbon. 🌍 Peatland Rehabilitation: Restoring 250,000 hectares of degraded peatlands, which could sequester ~10 million tonnes CO2 annually. 💧 River & Stream Rewilding: Restoring 25,000 km of European rivers to free-flowing conditions by 2030. 🐠 Marine Protected Areas Expansion: Increasing marine protected areas to cover 30% of Europe's seas, safeguarding marine biodiversity and supporting sustainable fisheries. 🌾 Sustainable Agriculture Practices: Converting 10 million hectares of farmland to organic farming practices by 2030, enhancing soil health, biodiversity and reducing chemical use. 🏡 Urban Green Spaces: Creating 15,000 hectares of urban green spaces by 2030 to improve air quality, biodiversity and the well-being of city dwellers across Europe. This new law marks a significant victory for nature, but it also provides an opportunity for all of us to step up and make a difference.
