EXCLUSIVE: Vertical has acquired U.S. rights to the adventure comedy Bookworm, starring Elijah Wood (Yellowjackets) and Nell Fisher (Evil Dead Rise). Directed by Wood’s frequent collaborator Ant Timpson (Come to Daddy), who penned the script with Toby Harvard, the film is slated for release later this year.
Bookworm follows 11-year-old Mildred (Fisher), whose life takes a wild turn when her estranged father, Strawn Wise (Wood), a washed-up Las Vegas illusionist, suddenly reappears. Years ago, after a magical encounter with the once-charming Strawn, Mildred’s mom moved back to New Zealand. Now, a comical mishap leaves Strawn caring for Mildred while her mom is hospitalized. Their first adventure? Camping to hunt for the mythological Canterbury Panther. As this mismatched duo navigates the wilderness, magic tricks, and an extraordinary quest, hilarity ensues, and they might just find a way to piece their family back together.
Pic is produced by Firefly Films New Zealand’s Emma Slade (Come to Daddy), Roxi Bull (Uproar) and Victoria Dabbs (Malevolent), as well as Nowhere’s Mette-Marie Kongsved (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore) and Laura Tunstall (Nine Days). Exec producers are Steven Demmler (Oh, Canada), Andres Rätsepp (Spider and Jessie), Blair Ward (The Apprentice), Anders Erdén (The Apprentice), Lauren Case (Meet Cute), Michelle Craig (Nine Days), Piero Frescobaldi (Oddity), Kelly Rogers (Sleeping Dogs), Kevin Gordon (Millie Lies Low), Wood (Lord of the Rings), Timpson and Harvard (Come to Daddy). Jake Rice (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) served as co-producer.
The film was made with financing from Talon Entertainment Finance, Orogen Entertainment, Images & Sound, the Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga New Zealand Film Commission and utilized the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate. Mister Smith is handling international sales.
Stated Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey commented, “Ant has crafted a hilarious yet wholesome film exploring the complexities of parent-child relationships that will leave audiences of all ages with smiles on their faces. We are so excited to share this film with US audiences later this year.”
Added Timpson, “This fun adventure about two endearing oddballs bonding in the great New Zealand outdoors offers the perfect escapism on the big screen. We had a blast making it with our super talented cast and crew, and now it’s time to release Bookworm into the wild for everyone to check out.”
Jarowey and SVP of Acquisitions Tony Piantedosi negotiated the deal on behalf of Vertical, with CAA Media Finance repping the production.
