EXCLUSIVE: Thunderbolts star Wyatt Russell is in talks to join Steven Spielberg‘s next event movie for Amblin and Universal Pictures. A deal for the actor is very close, we hear. The storyline is being kept under lock and key.
Russell joins a booming glitzy bench of thespians in the film including Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth and Eve Hewson. Universal has set a wide theatrical release for May 15, 2026.
Based on a story by Spielberg, the screenplay is by David Koepp, whose previous work with Spielberg includes the screenplays for Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Combined, those films earned more than $3 billion worldwide.
Five-time Oscar nominee Kristie Macosko Krieger is producing for the three-time Oscar-winning Spielberg. The director’s last film, the semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans, was released by Universal in 2022 and received seven Oscar nominations including for Directing, Original Screenplay, Actress and Best Picture.

Russell is known for playing John Walker in the Disney/Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the upcoming movie Thunderbolts, which is set to kick off summer during the first weekend of May 2025. The Angelino native’s feature credits include Escape From L.A., Soldier, Cowboys & Aliens, This Is 40, 22 Jump Street, Folk Hero & The Funny Guy, Overlord, The Woman in the Window, Night Swim and the Apple TV+/Legendary series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
