‘The Hunger Games: The Sunrise On The Reaping’

The Hunger Games: The Sunrise on the Reaping was announced on June 6 as author Suzanne Collins’ next book accompanied by a film adaptation from Lionsgate. The book is slated to be published on March 18, 2025, and it will be the fifth in the dystopian book series.

The film is currently set to debut in theaters on Nov. 20, 2026, but no casting decisions have yet been made. Francis Lawrence, who directed the final three films in the franchise adaptation of Collins’ first books as well as the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (BOSS), is in talks to direct.

The Sunrise on the Reaping will tell the story of the 50th Hunger Games, or the second Quarter Quell. Somewhere along the way in the brutal dystopian tradition of Districts providing tributes for gladiator-like games, the Head Game Maker (portrayed by Viola Davis in BOSS and Seneca Crane then Philip Seymour Hoffman in Catching Fire) decided that every 25 years, the requirements of the Reaping will be extra barbaric. The 50th Hunger Games rule for the Reaping was that twice the amount of tributes would be plucked to participate. Haymitch Abernathy (played by Woody Harrelson in the original films) who mentored Katniss later on, participated in those games.

Collins established the world of Panem in her original The Hunger Games trilogy, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay– which introduced Katniss Everdeen, Gale Hawthorne, Peeta Mellark and more. The first two books in the trilogy were adapted into films, and Mockingjay was split into Parts 1 and 2. Jennifer Lawrence starred as Katniss and Josh Hutcherson played Peeta in the four films with Liam Hemsworth playing Gale.

Collins released The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in 2020, which was adapted into its own film starring Rachel Ziegler as Lucy Gray Baird and Tom Blythe as a young Coriolanus Snow before he became President of Panem in Katniss’ books. Lucy Gray Baird won the 10th Hunger Games with Snow as her mentor in a new initiative established when Coriolanus was at the Academy.
