‘Sons’ Clip: Swedish Filmmaker Gustav Möller Returns With Psychological Thriller Starring Sidse Babett Knudsen — Berlin

'Sons' by Gustav Möller.

EXCLUSIVE: Swedish Filmmaker Gustav Möller made a lot of waves with his debut feature, The Guilty, which was adapted by Antoine Fuqua with an English-language cast including Jake Gyllenhaal.

Möller has now returned to feature filmmaking Sons (Vogter), which debuts this week in competition at the Berlin Film Festival. We can share the first clip from the pic above.

Billed as an “unsettling psychological thriller,” the film follows Eva, an idealistic prison officer, who is faced with the dilemma of her life when a young man from her past gets transferred to the prison where she works. Without revealing her secret, Eva asks to be moved to the young man’s ward – the toughest and most violent in the prison. Here begins an unsettling psychological thriller, where Eva’s sense of justice puts both her morality and future at stake.

Möller said he conducted “extensive research” for the pic with his co-writer, Emil Nygaard Albertsen, “visiting different prisons, speaking with inmates, officers, prison priests, psychiatrists, legal experts, victims of crime, all sides of the subject really.”

“Since the main character of the film is a prison officer, the most focal point of the research was, of course, from that perspective,” he said.

Möller’s last film The Guilty debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award in the World Cinema Dramatic category. The film went on to win an array of awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay at the Danish Film Awards. The pic was also shortlisted at the Academy Awards.

Möller also co-created the TV series The Dark Heart with writer Oskar Söderlund. The five-part psychological drama premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2022 and went on to win Best Series at the Series Mania International Panorama Competition.

Sons also stars Sebastian Bull, Dar Salim, Marina Bouras, Olaf Johannessen, Jacob Lohmann, Siir Tilif, Rami Zayat, and Mathias Petersen. It was produced by Lina Flint, with co-producer Eva Åkergren and associate producer Thomas Heinesen. Exec producers are Katrine Vogelsang, Calle Marthin, Henrik Zein. Les Films du Losange is handling world sales on the pic.
