Warner Bros has unveiled the first trailer for Trap, the latest twisty thriller from two-time Oscar nominee M. Night Shyamalan, which is slated for release on August 9.

Starring Josh Hartnett and Saleka Shyamalan, the film watches as a man and his daughter attend a pop concert where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event. Shyamalan directed from his own script and produced alongside Marc Bienstock and Ashwin Rajan.

When the trailer begins, we watch as Hartnett’s character takes his daughter to the arena concert of a singer named Lady Raven. All seems well, as the pair take selfies together and eat snacks while awaiting the show. But later, as Hartnett heads for the bathroom, he notices an enhanced police presence around the venue.

“What’s with all the police trucks outside and the cameras everywhere?” he asks a vendor.

“I’m not supposed to tell….Don’t rat me out,” the vendor replies. “You know the Butcher? That freaking nutjob that goes around just chopping people up? Well, the feds or whatever heard that he’s gonna be here today, so they set up a trap for him. This whole concert, it’s a trap.”

We then cut to Hartnett in a bathroom stall, where he brings up a video streaming app on his phone which shows him live video of a man in chains screaming for help. And we realize that Hartnett….is The Butcher.

“Your daughter’s never going to forget this day,” he’s told at trailer’s end, which is most assuredly true.

While Shyamalan had previously released his films through Universal, his new film comes amid a multi-year first-look directing and producing agreement with Warner Bros Pictures Group, on which we were first to report.

Thus far seeing his films gross over $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office, his latest effort was Uni’s Knock at the Cabin, which marked his seventh title to debut at No. 1.

Trap is set to open against Neon’s Cuckoo starring Hunter Schafer, Amazon MGM’s boxing drama The Fire Inside starring Brian Tyree Henry, Sony’s It Ends With Us, and Lionsgate’s long-awaited adaptation of the video game Borderlands.

Coming off success with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and soon to release Luca Guadagnino’s tennis love triangle pic Challengers internationally, Warner Bros has a stacked slate for the summer, which also includes Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (May 24), Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut feature The Watchers (June 14), Kevin Costner’s two-partner Horizon: An American Saga (June 28, August 16), Twisters (July 19), and at the tail end, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (September 6).
