FaceID Not Working with Normal Glasses

I just upgraded to ios 16. Face ID worked great after the upgrade. But a day later, it would not work. I reset Face ID, but the phone would not recognize me with my regular glasses on. The moment I removed them, I could go through the setup process. After restarting my phone and signing in with my passcode, I noticed Face ID would not recognize me with my glasses on, but the moment I removed them, I could get into my phone without any issues. My problem is that I wear my glasses all the time. Is this a bug?

I would love to, but on my phone, there is no “add glasses” link.

Hey there dmcclin500.

Thank you for keeping us updated. You will need to enable and set up "Face ID with a Mask". Once that has been successfully set up, you will get the option to "Add Glasses". This resource can guide you on how to set up Face ID with a Mask: Use Face ID while wearing a mask with iPhone 12 and later - Apple Support

1.) Make sure that your iPhone has iOS 15.4 or later.
2.) Open Settings, then tap Face ID & Passcode.
3.) Scroll down and turn on Face ID with a Mask.
4.) When prompted, tap Use Face ID with a Mask. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up Face ID using the same face scan process.

Just in case, the following video also has guidance on adding glasses as an option for Face ID:

We hope this information is helpful. Cheers.

Hey there, and welcome to Apple Support Communities dmcclin500,

We can certainly understand your concern and can help provide some insight. We recommend checking out these steps for more information on how to use Face ID with glasses.

" How to use Face ID when you're wearing glasses and a face mask

If you wear glasses, you can improve the accuracy of Face ID with a mask by setting it up with your glasses on. You can do this when you first set up Face ID or later. You can add up to four pairs of glasses with Face ID.

  1. Open the Settings app, then tap Face ID & Passcode.
  2. Scroll down and tap Add Glasses.
  3. Tap Continue when prompted, then follow the onscreen instructions.

To use Face ID with a mask, Face ID must clearly see your eyes and the areas around the eyes. Face ID with a mask is not designed to work with sunglasses. "
