  • 100% Black Friday Free Zone! 💡 At a:gain, we believe in challenging the norms that harm our planet. Black Friday represents overconsumption, waste, and the exploitation of scarce resources — values that go against everything we stand for! We can not stop construction projects. We can stop consumption. But, instead of encouraging the use of virgin materials and exhausting our planet's limited resources, we advocate for smarter, more sustainable choices: ✔ Upcycling waste into new, valuable products ✔ Making use of by-products ✔ Creating a circular economy that respects the boundaries of our planet Why? Because our planet can’t afford Black Friday! ❌ The environmental costs of overproduction and fast consumption are staggering. Together, we can rethink what and how we consume, prioritizing long-term solutions over short-term deals. Let’s invest in a future where sustainability and innovation replace exploitation and waste. Join us on this journey! ♻️

Why Bees Are Climate Heroes 🐝 When we think of climate champions, we often overlook the role of bees. Yet, these tiny pollinators are powerful defenders of our ecosystems, playing an unsung role in fighting climate change, especially in grassland environments. - Creating Biodiversity: Bees are essential in seed production for countless species of flowering plants, preserving the diversity in ecosystems like grasslands. Their pollination work ensures the health of native plants, which form a deep-rooted shield against soil erosion and store carbon underground. - Soil Guardians: Many bee species nest in soil, aerating it and promoting water retention. The vast plant root networks they support stabilize soil structure, facilitating healthy ecosystems that sustain a variety of life forms. How You We Help: - Plant native wildflowers, even in small spaces, and avoid pesticides. - Advocate for local mosquito management practices that protect bee habitats. - Support brands committed to sustainable agriculture and pollinator protection. - Bees are more than honey makers; they're climate superheroes! By taking small actions, we can all become guardians of these incredible pollinators. ℹ️Read the full article by WWF here: https://hubs.la/Q02X4gst0!

  • Let's throw back to a project reference we've completed in 2019! We're excited to present Upcycle Studio, a pioneering development that stands as the world’s first commercially scaled circular housing project. Located in Ørestaden, Copenhagen, this innovative project consists of 20 terraced houses designed to push the boundaries of sustainable architecture. This project, led by the Lendager Group in collaboration with building owner Nrep and contractor AG Gruppen achieved impressive environmental results. In line with its circular economy principles, Upcycle Studios incorporated 75% of its windows from public housing in North Jutland, used 1,000 tonnes of concrete waste from the Copenhagen Metro, and built floors, walls, and facades with upcycled wood offcuts from Dinesen. What a:gain [again] delivered? We delivered a pre-development mock-up project delivery of Viddø in which we encountered the issues with using demolition facade glass for new facades. Instead, today we use demolition facade glass to make our interior glass partition walls, Tystø, where our Viddø is made from discarded pre-consumer industrial glass. This groundbreaking project showcases the potential of circular design and responsible building practices. 🌱🏠 #CircularEconomy #UpcycleStudios #SustainableArchitecture

Microplastics Found in Dolphin Breath for the First Time 🐬 A groundbreaking study has uncovered microplastics in the exhaled breath of bottlenose dolphins, highlighting a concerning new route of exposure for marine life. Even dolphins in rural locations like Barataria Bay, Louisiana, were found inhaling these airborne contaminants. Researchers, working with Sarasota Dolphin Research Program and National Marine Mammal Foundation, sampled dolphins’ breath using petri dishes over their blowholes. Shockingly, all 11 dolphins in the study exhaled microplastics, with most particles identified as polyester—a common polymer from clothing. The findings suggest that microplastic particles, known for spreading globally via wind, are now polluting dolphins’ airways. Leslie Hart, co-author of the study, emphasizes the gravity: “Dolphins have a much larger lung capacity and take deep breaths, potentially exposing them to higher doses of microplastics than humans.” This revelation is alarming, especially for dolphins in areas like Barataria Bay, still recovering from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, where lung health remains compromised. The intersection of oil pollution and airborne microplastics could exacerbate health risks. These findings remind us that microplastics are an environmental crisis, affecting even the most majestic marine animals. Collective action on plastic pollution has never been more urgent. ℹ️Read the full article by the Guardian here: https://hubs.la/Q02X4h_P0!

A Daredevil Flight to Save Rare Birds 🐦 Imagine leading a flock of critically endangered bald ibises across 2,300 kilometers of sky. This isn't a fantasy but a bold conservation mission to save a species that vanished from Europe centuries ago. On 18 December, we'll recount how Austrian biologist Barbara Steininger and her colleagues faced storms, eagle attacks, and emergency landings—all from ultralight aircraft. The Waldrappteam’s human-led flights are vital, re-teaching these birds their migratory paths over the Alps to Spain. With climate change altering traditional routes, new challenges threaten the bald ibis' survival. Yet through incredible dedication, this project has nurtured a small but growing population, proving that innovative conservation can make a difference. This epic journey reminds us of nature’s fragility and resilience. Steininger reflects, “Seeing our birds reach a safe haven, welcomed by wild relatives, felt like leading them to paradise.” ℹ️Read the full article by the BBC here: https://hubs.la/Q02X420d0!

A Call to Action 🌿 The Living Planet Report 2024 by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) reveals a staggering 73% decline in wildlife populations over the past 50 years, signaling a "system in peril." This sharp decline, particularly in regions like Latin America (95%) and Africa (76%), highlights the urgent need for immediate action to protect our planet’s biodiversity. Biodiversity is crucial not only for the health of our ecosystems but also for human well-being, providing essential services like clean water and food security. Unfortunately, habitat loss, climate change, and overharvesting are pushing many species toward extinction. The report emphasizes that we are approaching dangerous tipping points that could have irreversible consequences. With global summits like COP16 and COP29 currently being held, now is the time for world leaders to translate commitments into action. We must advocate for robust national nature and climate plans, align policies, and increase investments that prioritize sustainability. ℹ️Read the full article by WWF here: https://hubs.la/Q02X4hgW0!

  • At Building Green DK 2024, Johan Rockström emphasized our shared responsibility with his talk on the planet’s health and climate tipping points. His message resonated deeply: we are approaching critical thresholds where even small changes could lead to irreversible damage to nature’s balance. At a:gain, we are proud to work with circular solutions that reduce CO₂ emissions and conserve resources. By producing new products from secondary resources, we create products like our Tystø partitions, made from reclaimed demolition glass, and our Viddø window elements, crafted from discarded insulated glass units. Additionally, our Hjælmø flooring repurposes wood offcuts into beautiful, durable end-grain brick flooring—each product a step toward a more sustainable building industry. Read more about how a:gain is advancing the circular transition, and explore Rockström’s key insights through the link in the first comment.
