With a personal donation of more than €2 million from the Grundfos Foundation | PDJF to Professor Peter Gorm Larsen, Aarhus University is launching a new project on #digitaltwins receiving massive support from industry. "We’ve been conducting research into digital twins since 2019, and we now have a total of 236 companies in our project portfolio. All these companies are actively contributing to the development of the field. With this grant, we can continue as leaders in the development of digital twins, build an even larger environment around the field.” Casper Hansen, CEO of Technicon A/S adds: “It’s important that projects like this are set up to develop competencies and stimulate development and innovation within digital twins. Exciting research happening at the intersection of digital twins and system dynamics. Martin Ulriksen har come to Aarhus University to develop innovative ways to establish data flows between the physical world, #digitaltwins, and system dynamics models. Together with many different industry partners he is trying to transfer the newest technology insights into value-creating solutions. “I’m working on a project right now, where we're developing digital twins of wind turbines. As things stand today, wind turbine companies send technicians to inspect offshore and onshore turbines at fixed intervals – and that’s expensive. With a digital twin, we’ll instead be able to predict when something actually needs to be inspected or repaired. And that will save a lot of money and hassle," he says. Jannie Knudsen will be defending her #PhD dissertation on Friday 14 February 2025.   During her studies, Jannie investigated complex soil-pile interactions of bored test piles in Danish Eocene clay (a stiff over-consolidated and very high plasticity clay). Fibre optic based distributed line sensors were embedded in the bored test piles to allow for a more comprehensive understanding of the soil-pile interaction behaviour. Min Wu has come to Aarhus University to conduct research that can make our construction sector greener. In the lab, he and his research group at the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering, Aarhus University are developing novel self-healing cement that can reduce the need for maintenance, repair and even demolition of our old buildings. “Cement-based materials such as concrete are the most used materials in buildings and infrastructure. The cement industry, and the built environment are currently among the highest CO2 emitters. So, our focus is improving the materials and thereby contributing to reducing the total CO2 footprint”. Sif Julie Friis will be defending her #PhD dissertation on Friday 7 February 2025. During her studies, Sif investigated the biomechanics of #gastric tissue and its interaction with injection mechanisms to advance oral #drugdelivery for #biologics. Through a combination of experimental methods and numerical simulations, Sif characterised the mechanical properties of gastric tissue, explored the effects of needle parameters on tissue interaction, and developed predictive models to support device optimisation. Her research also initiated studies on cellular responses to mechanical stress, contributing to a deeper understanding of tissue-device interactions. Her work enhances the design of safer and more effective drug delivery systems while reducing reliance on animal testing, paving the way for innovative solutions in the field. Bio-based products such as #bioplastics, biotextiles or recycled paperboard like above are often considered green products. However, their production process can be very resource demanding with a large impact on the #environment. A new research project headed by Aarhus University aims to optimise #circular bio-based production, reduce environmental impacts and strengthen #biobased industries across Europe. "Europe has big #climate ambitions, and circular bio-based products are a major part of the solution. The goal of the project is to develop innovative digital solutions specifically for bio-based industries, and to ensure that bio-based industries are at the forefront of circular production and economy, as well as sustainability," says Associate Professor Devarajan Ramanujan. Congratulations to Associate Professor Zongsu Wei, who has been awarded the prestigious James J. Morgan Early Career Award of the American Chemical Society.   The award recognises his significant contributions to solving the issues of emerging #pollutants, particularly the environmental accumulation of #foreverchemicals, #PFAS.    "This is a significant milestone in my career. When I first started my independent career, I never imagined I would be here today. This recognition inspires me to continue striving for excellence and to make a positive difference in the field of environmental engineering and science. Of course, I would not be here without the support of my incredible students, mentors, and family. This award should be shared with all of them," Zongsu Wei says.   He was among the first to test ultrasound-enhanced Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP’s) in pilot-scale applications, has developed novel strategies for promoting surface reactions in Fenton processes, and opened a new research direction by developing adsorptive photocatalysts for PFAS remediation.    His recent breakthrough in photocatalytic treatment of PFAS includes a single-step ultrafiltration membrane reactor.   Zongsu Wei took a Bachelor of Engineering at the University of Science and Technology Beijing and a Master of Science in #Environmentalengineering at The University of Toledo. He did his PhD at The Ohio State University and came to Aarhus University as a tenure track assistant professor in 2019. Wei is heading the Water Engineering Innovation research group at the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, Aarhus University.   The award will be presented to Wei at the American Chemical Society’s annual meeting in March. At a 10% additional cost, Europe’s future energy system can supply stable and reliable energy (based on 95% renewables) while at the same time delivering net-zero #CO2emissions. New research published in Nature Communications underscores that security of supply and climate policy can indeed go hand in hand: "We’re facing a huge expansion of #renewableenergy across Europe, but there’s a lot of uncertainty about whether it’s possible to ensure a robust #energysystem with such a high share of renewable energy. Our models show that it is feasible, even if electrification of various sectors requires energy production that is 3-4 factors larger than today. What’s important is that we hold back on phasing out all our thermal power plants," says PhD Ebbe Kyhl Gøtske, research fellow at the Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering, Aarhus University, and first author of the research paper. Congratulations to Edzard Spillner who’s just been appointed full professor at the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, Aarhus University.   His research area is #biochemistry and immunological #biotechnology with a focus on inflammation and allergic diseases and he’s heading the university’s Immunological Biotechnology research group.   “We try to understand what happens in the body on a molecular level, when an allergic reaction takes place. #Allergy is basically a misguided immune response to something that is not supposed to be harmful. Severe allergic reactions can actually tell us something about how the #immunesystem works and help us when it comes to other diseases.
