• 👀𝗔 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺, 𝗔𝗗𝗛𝗗, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮 In recent years, the prevalence of mental disorders such as autism, ADHD, and schizophrenia has been on the rise. These conditions significantly impact brain function, affecting behavior, thinking, and emotions, and pose substantial challenges for those affected, their families, and society.   However, there is hope🙏 Helene Halkjær Jensen, an assistant professor at Aalborg Universitet, will soon lead a new research project to uncover the underlying mechanisms of these disorders. Helene explains:   🗨️“Our molecular understanding of these diseases is limited. However, we have hypotheses about certain types of signaling that may be disrupted, which need to be studied in detail. I am thrilled about the new grant from Danmarks Frie Forskningsfond -  the Independent Research Fund Denmark - allowing us to explore a novel angle that has only recently come to light.   Today's treatment options include a combination of medication, therapy, and specialized educational programs. Yet, there is a pressing need for new treatment methods, which requires fresh research and insights into the root causes of these conditions🧫🦠   🗨️“I hope to piece together parts of the puzzle to enhance our understanding of these complex disorders. Ultimately, we can use this to improve medical treatments for those affected,” concludes Helene Halkjær Jensen. 🎉 Congratulations to Helene Halkjær Jensen on the new research project! #aaudk #Calmodulin #MedicalBiotechnology

#aaudk #dkforsk #watertechnology

  • 🎓 INVITATION TO PHD DEFENCE BY RODRIGO MAIA VALENCA🎓   Join us when Rodrigo enlightens us in his research on phosphorus recycling bacteria. ♻️   "Microbial Communities in the Urban Sewer Systems to Assess Immigration into Wastewater Treatment Plants". 🌱🦠   📅 December 17th 2024 🕙 Time: 10:00 - 13:00 📍 Building 7H, Room 3.122-3.128, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Aalborg University, Fredrik Bajers Vej 7H, 9220 Aalborg Ø In Rodrigos own words: 🦠My research dives into the diverse world of bacteria in Aalborg’s sewer systems to understand how they journey to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), where they play vital roles in treating wastewater. Think about your day so far - you’ve probably showered 🛀, brushed your teeth 🪥, or flushed a toilet 🚽. 💦Water is so integral to our lives that we often take it for granted. Once used, it becomes wastewater, rich in resources like phosphorus that can be recovered at WWTPs with the help of polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs). A key finding of my research is that bacteria crucial to WWTP processes grow within sewer systems. This PhD work enhances our understanding of sewer microbial dynamics and has the potential to improve the design of both sewer systems and WWTPs. I believe recycling isn’t just an option - it’s the only way forward in a world with finite resources. This field is essential for sustaining our water and nutrient cycles.   What advice would you give a new PhD student? Remember to take time to enjoy the journey. Don’t forget to smell the roses along the way. • 📢 PUBLISHED IN SCIENCE: Holobiont biology - Importance of microorganisms for host organisms New research from Aalborg Universitet and other universities about holobiont biology shows that microbiomes are crucial in understanding genetic traits and diseases. The research results are published in SCIENCE entitled “The disciplinary matrix of holobiont biology", and it has great potential and can, for example, provide solutions to: 🦠Agricultural production 🦠Conservation biology 🦠Human diseases. Associate Professor from Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Aalborg University, Simon Bahrndorff, is one of the authors of the SCIENCE article. He explains: 💬 “Holobiont biology is a change from considering organisms individually to a far greater degree of looking at the interaction between host organisms and microorganisms as an integrated system. This conceptual change unifies microbial symbiosis into the structure, function, and evolution of microorganisms and provides solutions for wide-ranging host activities, spanning agricultural production, conservation biology, and human diseases. The perspectives are many and can provide various solutions to the green transition”🌾🌏. 👀To understand the micro- and microbiological worlds it is central to address the entire collection of host cells and associated microbial cells (the holobiont) and hologenome (all multispecies genetic material in the holobiont). 💬 “Holobiont biology integrates modes of genomic and functional variation that emphasize the centrality of microorganisms. By looking at the hologenome, it is possible to explain more variation in traits than the host or microbial genomes alone”. 👏Congratulations to Simon Bahrndorff and colleagues for contributing to this paper in SCIENCE.   Read the article here👉🏻https://lnkd.in/dtvN5hfK The article's authors are: Seth Bordenstein, Tom Gilbert, Nichole Ginnan, Antonino Malacrinò, Maria Elena Martino, Simon Bahrndorff, Sunil Mundra, Michael D.
