Thanks to our longtime partners at IFAW and the Acadian Crabbing Association for highlighting our tech in this inspiring video. With support from IFAW, Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada and other regional partners, the New Brunswick snow crab fleet is at the forefront of adopting and helping refine new technology like ours that helps protect critically endangered species while allowing local fishing fleets and the communities that depend on them to continue to thrive economically. Special thanks to 'crabbiers' Joel Gionet, Stéphane Ferron and Rémi Guinard! https://lnkd.in/g_BZRJ_e

Changing ocean business through IoT tracking technology.
Om os
Blue Ocean Gear is start-up company based in Northern CA that provides technology solutions for IoT tracking on the ocean. We create high-tech buoys that can track gear in the marine environment, including detecting and locating lost or entangled fishing gear. These smart devices help fishermen save money while protecting the ocean environment.

It was wonderful to host our fellow members of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance community at Blue Ocean Gear!
Thanks again to the Sustainable Ocean Alliance team for the chance to show off some of our fantastic team and new(ish) Sausalito HQ last week as part of the SEAS Summit. Kudos to Doug Traeger for a great tech talk and Holly Kaufman, Inty Grønneberg, Mojca Zupan and Kortney Opshaug for an engaging panel covering the full spectrum of #oceanplastic solutions from microfiber filters to Smart Buoys

When it comes to ghost gear, it seems that most organization treat symptoms, but the source of it. Ghost gear is fishing gear that is lost and keeps catching fish and is not able to be harvested. Therefore, ghost gear hurts harvesters and the ecosystem. Sustainable Fisheries Partnership is taking a comprehensive approach by not only supporting clean-ups and recycling, but also by supporting the prevention of ghost gear. We commend them and look forward to working together with partners to implement a system of success for ocean stakeholders.
📢SFP's Bycatch Solutions Hub has a new resource for all things ghost gear 🎣 Ghost gear is any derelict fishing gear in the water, either lost or abandoned, that continues to catch fish and other wildlife. Globally, fishing gear accounts for 70% of macro-plastics found in the ocean. What are the solutions? ➡️ Gear tracking: Modern technologies equipped with satellite trackers allows vessels to track fishing gear in real-time and locate gear instantly, like Blue Ocean Gear ➡️ Net recycling organizations that purchase end-of-life nets, strip them to their individual components and sell them to plastic recycling facilities ➡️ Supporting projects and initiatives that are dedicated to preventing ghost gear from being lost and abandoned, or finding and collecting gear after it has been lost Check out the new solutions page here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e82RqprJ

🌊 World Oceans Day & National Donut Day: A Perfect Blend for Blue Ocean Gear! 🍩 We are celebrating two fantastic occasions: World Oceans Day and National Donut Day! At Blue Ocean Gear, we couldn't think of a better way to honor these days than by getting our team out on the water for a paddle right outside our office in beautiful Sausalito, CA. World Oceans Day reminds us of the critical role our oceans play in sustaining life on Earth. It's a day to reflect on the importance of preserving our marine environments and to take action towards protecting our blue planet. (On the other hand, National Donut Day is a delightful celebration of everyone's favorite sweet treat. Originating in 1938, this day honors the "Donut Lassies" of the Salvation Army who served donuts to soldiers during World War I) Our team at Blue Ocean Gear is taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of the ocean while enjoying some delicious donuts. It's a perfect opportunity to bond, reflect on our mission to innovate ocean gear, and enjoy the stunning views of the San Francisco Bay. Join us in celebrating these special days by taking a moment to appreciate the ocean and maybe even indulging in a donut or two. Let's continue to work together to protect our oceans and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. #WorldOceansDay #NationalDonutDay #BlueOceanGear #Sausalito

The Global Ghost Gear Initiative recently hosted its Annual Meeting, with stakeholders from all over the world including representatives from the fishing industry, seafood companies, governments, NGO’s, and fishing tech companies, including our CEO Kortney Opshaug. Lost fishing gear, also referred to as ghost gear, is one of the most lethal forms of marine debris as it results in staggering losses of marine life, from small fish to seabirds to marine mammals. The discussions led by the GGGI on ways to tackle this issue through education, cleanup, and prevention are critical on the path for elimination of this problem forever. Blue Ocean Gear has been a leader in enabling fishing fleets to address ghost gear using our Smart Buoy tracking technology to prevent gear loss, and we will continue to be part of these global efforts as we all work toward ghost gear-free oceans. #ghostgear #sustainablefishing #SDG14 #oceantech

We're very appreciative of our partnership with NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and their Technology Partnerships office for celebrating this success story. #blueoceangear #marineinnovation #smartbuoys
We're celebrating National Small Business Week with a new #NOAASBIR success story about two NOAA-funded small businesses that are partnering to help marine mammals and fishermen with innovative ropeless fishing gear technology. When a #SmallBusiness uses NOAA #SeedFunding to transform an idea into a technology that is available on the open marketplace, it is a big win for both the company and the NOAA Small Business Innovation Research program. But it is a unique double-win when two NOAA-funded small businesses team up to combine their innovative technologies for a good cause. Blue Ocean Gear was highlighted as a gear manufacturer at SFP's Bycatch Solutions Showcase at Seafood Expo North America/Seafood Processing North America a few weeks ago. Ryan Lind of Blue Ocean Gear tracked one of the company’s smart buoys and demonstrated how its technology could be used to trace traps that drift off. Paired with traditional gear, it can also prevent “ghost gear,” or a lost apparatus that may then catch a whale or sea turtle, injuring or killing them, and alert fishers when traps might move into areas that are closed because of whale migration. ecoRI News with the story ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/d5pKdzPb
