Congrats to our PhD Van-Phuc Bui for his recent publication to improve the efficiency of Earth observation communications by removing clouds and redundant pixels from satellite images before sending them to ground. Read his whole publication titled "Semantic Image Encoding and Communication for Earth Observation with LEO Satellites” in IEEE Transactions on Cognitive Communications and Networking at https://lnkd.in/dApZht4c. Read the open access version at https://lnkd.in/ddWnEFkt and make sure to check AAU Space for more information about our other space activities.
In the rapidly advancing field of Earth Observation (EO) using LEO satellites, efficient data transmission is more crucial than ever. Traditional methods like band selection and autoencoding are well-studied, but they often compromise the integrity of data when it reaches the ground, especially in areas where precise information is vital, like vegetation surveys. We introduce a novel approach that preserves the quality of raw data, focusing on transmitting only the critical changes detected in multi-spectral images, thereby ensures that no valuable information is lost or distorted during downlink communication. Our paper “Semantic Image Encoding and Communication for Earth Observation with LEO Satellites” with Thinh Dinh, Israel Leyva-Mayorga, Shashi Raj Pandey, Eva Lagunas, Petar Popovski is published in IEEE Transactions on Cognitive Communications and Networking.
