🌍Port Esbjerg Supports Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virgina Offshore Wind project We have contributed to Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW), which is set to deliver clean energy to up to 660,000 homes in Virginia while reducing CO2 emissions by up to five million tons annually. Port Esbjerg is the only port in the world equipped with the necessary infrastructure and capacity, including specialised heavy-lift cranes, to facilitate the production of foundations on this scale. 🏗️ A Milestone project The first of three massive jacket foundations, weighing approx. 2.445,6 tons and standing 60 meters tall, has been safely transferred to transportation vessels, and departed Port Esbjerg and are now on their way across the Atlantic. The jackets are designed to withstand harsh offshore conditions, including strong Atlantic currents and winds, and are critical to the stability of the offshore substations. The large-scale of the jacket foundations exemplifies how Port Esbjerg enables large-scale energy transition projects through operations and collaboration. ⚓ Global Partnerships The successful shipment reflects a close collaboration between key partners within the offshore wind industry. From Dominion Energy driving the CVOW project, overseeing its planning, construction, and eventual operation, to CS WIND Offshore, producing the steel jacket structures at Port Esbjerg to Semco Maritime, providing technical expertise by designing and installing electrical systems, emergency equipment, and inter-array cabling for the offshore substations, as well as ISC Consulting Engineers, who have played an important part in producing full detailed design off the three jacket fundations and topsides for the offshore substations. In the middle of it all stands Port Esbjerg, Europe’s leading offshore wind hub, which served as the production and logistics center, providing infrastructure to enable the assembly, handling, and shipment of the massive jacket foundations. This milestone highlights the importance of international collaboration, innovation, and infrastructure in accelerating the global energy transition. At Port Esbjerg, our role in projects like CVOW underscores the port’s capacity to support the growing demands of the offshore wind industry and facilitate the delivery of sustainable energy solutions on a global scale.

At the Port Esbjerg, our LHM 600 and LHM 800 mobile harbour cranes join forces to lift colossal 12 MW wind blades with synchronised precision. This tandem-lifting operation in the heart of Denmark’s wind energy hub is a true showcase of engineering excellence. The secret? Our Sycratronic assistance system! One operator controls both cranes at once, with movements perfectly synchronised for flawless performance. Unlike manual tandem lifts, which are limited to 75% of the crane capacity, Sycratronic unleashes their full lifting power. 💪 #liebherr #windenergy #maritimecranes #portoperations #renewableenergy

“The traffic to and from the global market for Ro/Ro towards Port Esbjerg is increasing. Naturally, we need to tap into this potential.” These are the words from our new Business Development Manager, Tracy Jin. With more than 10 years of experience from working across the supply chain, Tracy has an in-depth understanding of the opportunities and potential of the global market combined with a local knowledge. “Port Esbjerg is one of the Nordic’s major intermodal hubs. Our aspiration is to become an intermodal logistics hub for all of Europe. To reach this potential, we need to develop growth opportunities towards global markets and create solutions for existing and new customers through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions,” Tracy says. The expansion of the port area, the ongoing deepening of the fairway and developing the port to optimize operations for the TEN-T network are crucial components for scaling the area. This ensures a strong platform for the future, in which Tracy will play a pivotal role: “We are world renowned for our key role in the offshore wind sector. Now, we need to create the same awareness in the global market about our solutions for the whole supply chain. It is a major task, that I am very honoured to be a part of. We have an exciting journey ahead of us,” Tracy ends. At Port Esbjerg, Tracy will strengthen our ability to connect with global markets and lead the way in driving growth and innovation across the supply chain.

Inauguration of new Green Hydrogen Facility near Esbjerg ⚡ With the newly inaugurated green hydrogen facility in Måde, near Esbjerg, we mark a pioneering step towards sustainable energy systems, as European Energy’s first large scale hydrogen production facility is now fully operational. 💧 Construction of the Måde facility was completed in June 2024, with new plans in place to expand the facility with two additional electrolysers, of which the next is expected to be installed in 2025. When all three electrolysers are in operation, the facility will have a total capacity of 12MW and an annual production of 1,500 metric tonnes of hydrogen. ⚡The green hydrogen produced at the Måde facility will be supplied to Port Esbjerg and other partners in the Esbjerg area. As the North Sea’s leading port for offshore wind and multimodal transport, we are pleased to play a role in this transformative green hydrogen project. By supporting innovative energy solutions, it supports how industry wide change can be driven and sustainable growth fostered across multiple sectors. 🏘️The excess heat generated by hydrogen production will be utilized by DIN Forsyning to provide heating in the Esbjerg municipality. This not only ensures efficient use of resources but also provides a sustainable heating solution for the local area. The operation of the Måde facility will provide valuable insights on green hydrogen production, not only for Port Esbjerg but for the whole of the industry.

A step closer to Denmark's largest offshore wind farm: Thor 🌊 At Port Esbjerg, we are thrilled to see that the construction of RWE's Danish offshore wind farm, Thor, has reached a key milestone. The first batch of monopiles has been successfully offloaded and stored at Eemshaven in the Netherlands. To put things into context, these monopiles measure up to 100 meters in length and weigh up to 1,500 tonnes – equivalent to 1,000 small cars! 🚗 In collaboration with our alliance partners, Groningen Seaports from the Offshore Wind Port Alliance, the monopiles are being stored at their base port in Eemshaven. Looking ahead, the installation of the turbines is scheduled to be carried out from Port Esbjerg, starting in 2026. We believe this is a great example of how building offshore wind projects on this scale requires international collaboration between ports to meet the logistical and infrastructural demands of these complex projects. Coordination across the industry is necessary, if we are to redeem the ambitious targets for the green transition for the offshore wind industry and Europe in general. Once completed, RWE’s offshore wind farm Thor will have a capacity of 1 GW, generating enough electricity to power over one million Danish homes. Port Esbjerg is proud to be part of this transformative project, alongside our alliance partners at Groningen Seaports, reinforcing the key role international ports play in developing renewable energy projects.
