Microalgae offer a unique combination of high nutritional value and environmental advantages, positioning them as a potential key solution for feeding the world’s growing population. Currently, Europe relies heavily on imports for its algal biomass, contributing only 0.6% of global algae production. To incorporate microalgae into Europe’s protein strategy and address diverse market demands, significant efforts are needed to scale up production. These initiatives are essential for microalgae to contribute meaningfully to Europe’s sustainability objectives, including the European Green Deal and the Bioeconomy Strategy. 🚤 The European Coast Guard Cooperation. 🚤 EU institutions have agreed to establish a cooperative framework for European coast guard functions to enhance support for national authorities. To achieve this, the regulations of three EU agencies—the European Fisheries Control Agency - EFCA, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), and the European Border and Coas Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex)—were amended in 2016. This led to the adoption of a Tripartite Working Arrangement (TWA) outlining the modalities of cooperation among the three agencies. The primary goal is to assist national authorities in implementing coast guard functions across sectors and borders. This interagency collaboration has since become an integral part of the daily operations of the three agencies. In the picture: executive directors of the three agencies, from left, Susan Steele, EFCA; Maja Markovčić Kostelac, EMSA; and Hans Leijtens, Frontex, share a handshake to signal their cooperation with regard to coast guard activities in support of Member States. Commercial fish farming in #Croatia began in the mid-20th century, with notable progress taking place in the 1950s and 1960s, focusing on freshwater species such as carp and trout. Marine aquaculture gained momentum in the 1980s, particularly with the cultivation of sea bass and sea bream, leveraging Croatia’s extensive Adriatic coastline and ideal conditions for marine farming. Today, Croatia ranks as the 5th largest producer of sea bass in the Mediterranean. 📢Türkiye is set to take the spotlight as the cover feature in the upcoming issue of Eurofish Magazine📢 Eurofish is visiting the Dalyan Fisheries Cooperative (DALKO) in Mugla province - the largest of its kind with some 750 members. The cooperative manages stocks of mullet, seabass, and seabream that breed in the Mediterranean and then migrate to the Köycegiz lake to feed and grow before returning to the sea to spawn again. Mullet is the most important fish in terms of volumes for the cooperative, which has established a complex system of cages and barriers to trap the fish as they migrate. There are two harvesting periods, the main one in winter and the smaller one in summer. Once the fish are caught, they are typically sold fresh on ice and distributed over the entire country. The cooperative also fillets some of the fish and sells the fillets to restaurants. However, the most lucrative product is the roe which the local consumers highly prize. The roe is removed from the females, salted, and dried. The best specimens, depending on the size, are coated with wax which prolongs the shelf life by a few weeks. The cooperative also sells some quantities of blue crab, an invasive species that is becoming more common in the area #eurofishmagazine #Türkiye #fishing #mullet
