Commercial fish farming in #Croatia began in the mid-20th century, with notable progress taking place in the 1950s and 1960s, focusing on freshwater species such as carp and trout. Marine aquaculture gained momentum in the 1980s, particularly with the cultivation of sea bass and sea bream, leveraging Croatia’s extensive Adriatic coastline and ideal conditions for marine farming. Today, Croatia ranks as the 5th largest producer of sea bass in the Mediterranean. 📢Türkiye is set to take the spotlight as the cover feature in the upcoming issue of Eurofish Magazine📢 Eurofish is visiting the Dalyan Fisheries Cooperative (DALKO) in Mugla province - the largest of its kind with some 750 members. The cooperative manages stocks of mullet, seabass, and seabream that breed in the Mediterranean and then migrate to the Köycegiz lake to feed and grow before returning to the sea to spawn again. Mullet is the most important fish in terms of volumes for the cooperative, which has established a complex system of cages and barriers to trap the fish as they migrate. There are two harvesting periods, the main one in winter and the smaller one in summer. Once the fish are caught, they are typically sold fresh on ice and distributed over the entire country. The cooperative also fillets some of the fish and sells the fillets to restaurants. However, the most lucrative product is the roe which the local consumers highly prize. The roe is removed from the females, salted, and dried. The best specimens, depending on the size, are coated with wax which prolongs the shelf life by a few weeks. The cooperative also sells some quantities of blue crab, an invasive species that is becoming more common in the area #eurofishmagazine #Türkiye #fishing #mullet

📢 World Fisheries Day 📢 : A day to appreciate fish, the people who catch them, and the ecosystems that keep them swimming. It's a gentle nudge to stop overfishing, protect fish habitats, and ensure we don't turn "seafood" into "see-no-food." 🐟 🐙 🦐 The day was established in 1997 to highlight the importance of sustainable fishing practices and the well-being of fisheries-dependent communities worldwide. #eurofishint #fisheries #sustainability
