📢 World Fisheries Day 📢 : A day to appreciate fish, the people who catch them, and the ecosystems that keep them swimming. It's a gentle nudge to stop overfishing, protect fish habitats, and ensure we don't turn "seafood" into "see-no-food." 🐟 🐙 🦐 The day was established in 1997 to highlight the importance of sustainable fishing practices and the well-being of fisheries-dependent communities worldwide. #eurofishint #fisheries #sustainability

Lampreys are considered some of the most primitive vertebrates, often described as living fossils. Fossil records date them back approximately 360 million years to the late Devonian period, with some researchers suggesting that their lineage might extend over 500 million years to the Cambrian period. Whether or not this is confirmed, lampreys remain one of the oldest vertebrate groups on Earth, having coexisted with dinosaurs and enduring at least four major extinction events. Fish and seafood are the world’s most traded food group. In 2022, nearly 38% of the global production of 184.5 million tonnes entered markets worldwide, and over half of the trade’s value originated from developing countries. Globalisation and market liberalisation have fuelled this trade boom, however, the market expansion also brings challenges, as differing regulations risk product rejections in importing countries.
