Several news media, including Reuters, report that on November 17, a subsea telecom cable connecting Finland and Germany was reportedly severed. The 1,200 km (745 miles) fibre optic cable, known as C-Lion1, runs through the Baltic Sea from Helsinki to the German port of Rostock. Finnish state-controlled company Cinia stated, “As a result of the fault, the communication connections running on the C-Lion1 submarine cable are down,” adding that the disruption’s cause is under investigation. The damage, located near Sweden’s Oland island, may have been caused by an outside force, with repairs expected to take 5–15 days. In a joint statement, the Finnish and German foreign ministries expressed deep concern and confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway. This incident highlights the vulnerabilities of subsea infrastructure critical to global connectivity.
