The Finish nuclear power plant, Olkiluoto, is starting to compete with the Swedish nuclear power plant, Forsmark for being the leading cause of major (loss of generation) disturbances in the Nordic power system. Yesterday, November 17th, at 15:25:51, Olkiluoto 3 had another turbine failure, tripping all 1600 MW of generation and causing the Nordic system frequency to drop to 49.59 Hz. The failure is expected to last several days. - On September 3rd, Olkiluoto 3 experienced a fault that caused it to drop 640 MW, leading the Nordic frequency to fall to 49.77 Hz. - On June 10th, Forsmark Block 3 experienced a reactor trip of 1172 MW, causing the Nordic system frequency to drop to 49.61 Hz. - On June 3rd, 2024, Olkiluoto 3, with 1600 MW, suddenly tripped due to a turbine malfunction. The Nordic system frequency dropped to 49.58 Hz. - On May 13, 2024, the Forsmark Block 1 nuclear power plant in Sweden, which has a capacity of 1 GW, tripped due to a grid failure. - On the 25th of November 2023 the Swedish Forsmark reactor experienced a fault, tripping block 3, with a capacity of 1.2 GW. Resulting in a similar frequency drop reaching 49.6 Hz. - On 26th April 2023, it was the two blocks (1 and 2) of the Forsmark plant that were tripped, resulting in a loss of production of 1.0 GW and 1.1 GW, respectively. Hybrid Greentech - Energy Storage Intelligence was supporting the Nordic power system during this fault with its portfolio of grid-connected battery systems and electric vehicles.

DK2 is expanding its lead as the most attractive place in the Nordic countries to install batteries! Yesterday, DK2's spot price was 473 €/MWh, which is even higher today at 549 €/MWh (the highest spot price since 2022). Energy arbitrage (charge at a low price and discharge at a high price) has become an increasingly important revenue stream for battery systems in recent months. Unlike the saturating ancillary services markets, energy arbitrage is a growing market and value stream. In the day-ahead market of DK2, several daily price spreads have grown in magnitude, allowing for up to two daily charging cycles with spreads of around 100 €/MWh —already exceeding the delivery of FCR-D. Most of these price spreads do not exist on the other side of Øresund in southern Sweden (SE4), as the spot prices are stable and low during most hours. Moving a bit north to the Stockholm region (SE3), there are even fewer spot price movements. All the Swedish hydro capacity is in the north, so a higher latitude means less spot price variance and a worse case for a BESS project. The price zones SE1 and SE2 have virtually no spot price movements. The same is true for Norway, where spot price fluctuations are small in NO1, NO5, and NO2, while they are absent in NO3 and NO4. The maturing ancillary service markets require increasing professionalism from the Balance Responsible Parties to co-optimize energy trading and service provision, continuing to create a strong investment return for battery owners. Denmark first rolled out granular (hourly or quarterly) energy billing meters to most consumers ten years ago, but one Nordic country is still lagging. The widespread rollout of granular (also called smart) meters to all consumers is the most important step in the green transition and has been heavily supported by EU regulations. Since 2009, Member States have been requested to proceed with the roll-out for a minimum of 80% of electricity end-users by the year 2020, in compliance with the provisions set out in the Third Energy Package. Customers without a smart energy meter cannot help the grid and themselves by moving their consumption to hours with high renewable generation and low prices because they are not paying for what they use in a specific hour. Their balance responsible party cannot purchase additional energy for them during those hours because they don’t see any price elasticity. Before smart meters, we had profiled meters that were read once per year or month. The profile then spreads the bulk energy consumption out on the individual hours with a fixed ratio per hour. In most of the Nordic countries, it seems like a past decade to operate a grid with profiled meters, as 99.9% of the volume is measured by smart meters — except in Sweden. In Sweden, 24% of the total consumption is profile-metered. For all that volume, only the monthly total of consumption is read each month, which seems odd for a Nordic country. That number is around 0.1% in the rest of the Nordics. The figure shows the consumption per 15-minute period in each Nordic country for the first three weeks of October. The “flex settled” is the same as "metered" while “profiled” is the non-smart meters. Post by Andreas Barnekov Thingvad

Our trading systems director, Andreas Barnekov Thingvad presented at eCarExpo Danmark, how Hybrid Greentech - Energy Storage Intelligence generates the highest possible value from the batteries under different market conditions. The distribution of revenue streams of batteries in DK2 has changed significantly in the past year. Initially, in 2023, FCR-D was the optimal choice for most hours, except when there was a demand for FFR. In May, the FCR-N market took over as the main revenue stream following a drop in the FCR-D prices. The FCR-N market also experienced increasing saturation as the prices converged to what could be earned by a battery delivering FCR-D up + down. A one-hour battery can sell 80% of its capacity for FCR-D but only 50% for FCR-N. Energy trading or arbitrage has become an increasing revenue stream in the past months as there have been several daily price spreads with increasing magnitude in the day-ahead market, allowing up to two daily cycles. The maturing ancillary service markets require increasing professionalism from the Balance Responsible Parties to co-optimize energy trading and service provision to continue creating a good investment return for the battery owners.

This time it is the Nordic aFRR capacity market that is close to emptying the merit order and experiencing extremely high prices. The price of aFRR Down in DK2 peaked at 5.39 k€/MW/h in the first hour of the 22nd of October. It then returned to the regular level of 14 €/MW/h per hour until 09:00 when it again increased to 1.79 k€/MW/h. There was another evening price peak, and the extreme prices then came back for some hours of the day on the 23rd of October. The way prices jump between low and extremely high reflects the market's lack of liquidity. The aFRR capacity for DK2 is purchased on a Nordic capacity market with a total capacity of only 200-400 MW. Compared to the FCR markets, aFRR is a very small market with almost no liquidity, despite the generally relatively high prices, due to significantly higher entry barriers. The national DK1 capacity market did not have any similar price movements. The aFRR Down is continuously decreasing, now at 5.23€/MW/h while Up remains high at around 100 €/MW/h. post by Andreas Barnekov Thingvad
