Big congratulations to the amazing team at Reel for winning the Rethink Cities Innovation Award! 🎉 We're beyond excited to have had you with us on this inspiring journey. 🌱 We can’t wait to see what comes next for Reel and all our other remarkable finalists, all paving the way toward a sustainable urban future! 🚀

🎤 What you missed at the #RethinkCitiesInnovationAwards 💫 Last Monday, the stage at Sønderborg came alive with powerful ideas and transformative visions, thanks to our incredible keynote speakers. Each brought their unique expertise, leaving us with invaluable perspectives on how we can rethink and reshape our cities for a sustainable future: 💡Sissel Hansen, Co-founder of Impact the Future masterfully guided us through the day as our moderator, ensuring every moment of the event flowed seamlessly. Her energy, insight, and ability to connect with both speakers and audience members truly made the event unforgettable. 💡Kjeld Stærk, Chairman of the Committee for Business and Green Growth, Sønderborg Municipality (Sønderborg Kommune); former Senior Vice President, Chairman, Danfoss set the stage with an inspiring opening speech, highlighting the importance of collaboration, innovation, and leadership in driving sustainable urban transformation. 💡Prof. Dr. Gesa Ziemer, Academic Lead UNITAC Hamburg (with UN Habitat, OICT); Director City Science Lab (with MIT Media Lab) posed a critical question: “How can we implement urban technologies in cities and scale them up?” offering a forward-thinking roadmap for integrating technology into urban landscapes. 💡Navid Samandari, Head of Ventures at The Footprint Firm, asked us to consider: “Do we need more innovation to feed our net-zero ambitions?” pushing us to reimagine the role of innovation in achieving a sustainable future. 💡Daria (Dasha) Krivonos, CEO of the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies reframed uncertainty as a tool, not an obstacle, with her keynote: “Uncertainty as a feature, not a bug.” Her words encouraged us to embrace unpredictability as a catalyst for creativity and resilience. Their words left a lasting impact, inspiring us all to rethink and rebuild cities for a sustainable future. 🌍✨ What was your favourite moment from the event? Thank you, Hugo Paquin, for your kind words, participation, and invaluable support with the startup outreach at the #RethinkCitiesInnovationAwards 🙏. It was a pleasure working alongside you to highlight the innovative solutions driving us towards net-zero emissions 🌍💡. As you rightly pointed out, the event underscored the urgent need for bold, pragmatic action in addressing the climate crisis 🌱. Sønderborg Kommune’s commitment to achieving carbon-neutrality by 2029 through its ProjectZero initiative is truly inspiring. Impact the Future is honoured to help propel this vision into action through our #RethinkCities project, fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors 🤝. Public-private partnerships are essential in our journey towards a sustainable urban future, and our award finalists SEEDiA.city, SHIT2POWER, RiDERgy, Effinigo, WeavAir, Impact Market and winners, Reel, Insutex and greenmetrics.ai serve as excellent examples of how innovation can drive meaningful change 🌱 We’re excited to see how the partnerships and ideas sparked at the event continue to evolve, and we look forward to the positive impact they will have in building a more sustainable, future for all 🌍✨

Fun day in Sønderborg 🇩🇰 yesterday at the Rethink Cities Innovation Awards, a project I had the opportunity to directly support with its startup outreach. The goal of the event is to foster public-private rapprochement towards achieving net-zero. Main takeaway for the day? The data doesn't lie. Globally, we are running into a wall. We need to be bolder about the actions we take, and we need the discourse around climate action to be much more honest and pragmatic. We get the future we deserve. Sønderborg, a Danish city of 75.000 I first heard about a few months ago, is staking its claim to become carbon neutral by 2029 (!!) via its ProjectZero initiative. To do so, it's relying on novel technologies, bold investments and open innovation principles to enable a more rapid deployment of solutions. Here are the startups that won the pitch competition along the three categories 🏆 Renewables: Reel/Jon Sigvert: Seels green energy Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to companies including SMBs, which it then uses to help finance solar and wind energy parks. (Pleasure to share jury duties with you, Tiago Julião Neves and Kjeld Stærk) 🏆 Energy Efficiency: Insutex/Thomas Aspen: upcycles old clothes and garments to produce insulation for the real estate sector 🏆 Public-Private Parntership: greenmetrics.ai/Tiago Marqes: Early-warning system for flooding in cities Great to see familiar faces (Simay Arikan, Jonas Schorr, Sønderborg's own Sissel Hansen) and meet new ones (Aneesh Mohan, Nina Heine, Alexander Ohrt, Navid Samandari, Tiago Julião Neves) Special thanks to Chiara Renée Podbielski and the Impact the Future team for the trust and making this event happen.
