  • IMS has collaborated with partners in Zimbabwe for 20 years to ensure that media has been able to serve communities, hold power to account and push for democratic rights. From legislation to diversity guidelines and equal opportunities for all genders - our work and collaborations with partners and coalitions has contributed to an expansion of media and public interest journalism, progressive media laws, policies and practices, as well as gender diversity and equality improvements. Throughout the years IMS has worked with a long list of media outlets and civil society organisations in the country and regionally – and with our current donors Sida and the Delegation of the European Union to Zimbabwe we continue to support Zimbabwean media’s role as a catalyst, watch dog and enabler of democratic transition in Zimbabwe. As IMS' director Jesper Højberg states in the video below: Media development is a long game!

  • IMS welcomes yesterday’s reports of a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel. Now, there can be more excuses: It is time to grant full and free access to international journalists into Gaza. For over 15 months, Palestinian journalists have carried the enormous responsibility of documenting and reporting on the countless atrocities committed against their own people during Israel's war on Gaza. Give them a chance to rest, to mourn and bury their loved ones, to reunite with their families. Time is of the essence: In the coming days and months, it is essential that people in Gaza are kept informed about where and how to access humanitarian aid. Just as importantly, war crimes and other international crimes need to be investigated by journalists, researchers and fact-finding teams – both to counter decades of complete impunity for Israel’s killings of journalists and pave the way for justice for the Palestinian people. • We express our deep concern over the arrest of Mzia Amaghlobeli, the founder and director of Gazeti Batumelebi and the troubling circumstances surrounding her detention. Mzia Amaghlobeli has dedicated more than two decades to fighting for freedom of speech and independent journalism in Georgia. Her unwavering commitment to democracy and free expression has ensured critical voices are heard. The charges against her and reports of inappropriate treatment in custody raise serious concerns about media freedom and journalist safety in Georgia. These actions point to a broader context of pressure on independent media outlets. Her arrest and detention are a direct affront to her rights and a severe blow to independent journalism, significantly hindering the work of Batumelebi and Netgazeti at a critical time for Georgia. IMS urges Georgian authorities to ensure transparency, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law. We call for her immediate release, as there is no evidence she poses a risk to the investigation. We stand in solidarity with Mzia Amaghlobeli and call on all supporters of media freedom to join us in defending press freedom and democracy in Georgia.

  • Yesterday, 26 December, Israeli forces killed five journalists in #Gaza in a direct airstrike on their car. According to Reuters and other news media, the vehicle had visible press markings. The five journalists - Faisal Abu Al Qumsan, Ayman Al Gedi, Fadi Hassouna, Mohammed Al-Ladaa and Ibrahim Sheikh Ali - worked for Al-Quds Al-Youm TV, a channel affiliated with armed group Islamic Jihad. The Israeli army said the victims were militants posing as media workers but has not produced any evidence to support its claim. This makes the incident consistent with several past instances in which #Israel has accused journalists of being involved in armed activity without any supporting evidence, such as in the case of the targeted killing in January of Al Jazeera’s Hamza Al Dahdouh and freelancer for AFP Mustafa Thuraya. As we have stated many times previously, we repeat that journalists are considered civilians under international law and that warring parties are obliged to protect them as such. As noted by Irene Khan, the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, journalists become a legitimate target only if they participate directly in hostilities or incite war crimes or other international crimes. This latest attack brings the count to a total of nine journalists killed in Gaza in 12 days and underlines how, 15 months after the onset of the war, Israel continues to kill journalists at an unprecedented level. We reiterate the Special Rapporteur’s contention that silencing journalists by killing them is the most serious form of censorship. We join our colleagues at Committee to Protect Journalists in calling on the international community to act immediately to protect Palestinian journalists in Gaza and to push for and end Israel’s impunity for these killings. For every instance in which actors with the power to intervene stand idly by, they become ever more complicit in Israel’s crimes in Gaza. While meaningful action is long overdue, late, as always, is better than never. Read the report of the Special Rapporteur here: https://lnkd.in/gPP-ydAH Photo by Moiz Salhi/Anadolu via Getty Images
